Default Check Engine light and OBD readouts

I was not happy when my CEL came on yesterday. I have less than 500 miles on the truck. Anyway, Im used to being able to read my own codes, as Ive done on my wife's Explorer for many years (the Ex has the OBD 1 system of old)

Anyway, I can go down to Autozone and get a code reader, but Im not sure where the port is on this truck, and I dont know where to find the code definitions.

Are OBDII codes standardized across all brands? Can someone point me to the codes for the Ram if they arent?

I want to know the reported problem before going to the dealer.

Maybe we can turn the thread into a OBD scanner thread.

What features are good to have in a scanner? Ive never owned one. What is the difference between the high dollar ones and the cheaper ones?

Does the key trick not work any more? On all of my Dodges you cycle the key on/off 3 times and the codes come up in the odometer display. Or flash the check engine light on the older ones.

i dont believe that any of the OBD2 models will do the "key trick".

I'm pretty sure my '97 is OBDII.
http://www.dakota-truck.net/CODES/codes.html
I'm also pretty sure that my '07 6.7 cummins is as well.
Both of them work with the key cycle on/off 3 times.
Almost every thing after '96 is OBDII.

I just found out today that Autozone stopped loaning out the code readers and wont even read them for free, like they used to do.

Now I either have to buy a scanner, or just take it to the dealer without knowing, which I dont want to do, because I dont trust dealers, as a rule.
