Towing Capability - Has anyone towed anything big yet?
I don't care about the trucks. Just hope and pray to god you never get in an accident when overloaded, even if it's not really your fault. your life will change very much, and not in a good way. My point is that there's a lot more to consider than 'will i tear up my truck'.
Okay,
I read through this entire thread and there are many good points made about safety, proper equipment and such. But to answer the original question "Has anyone towed anything big yet?" - I thought I would weigh in (no pun intended). I just recently purchased a 2009 Ram 1500 Crew Cab SLT Big Horn edition to tow our Rockwood 8318SS travel trailer which weighs in at 6200 lbs dry, has 858 lbs of tongue weight and is 33' long from hitch to bumper - in other words, this is a big camper.
This truck drags the camper around like a play toy - no kidding. We also have a 2005 Durango 4x4 SLT Hemi, which by the way has been towing this same camper for the past two years with ease. While the Durango can tow too, I have had some white knuckle moments in windy conditions due to the length of the trailer and short wheel base on the Durango. With the Ram, those days are gone!
Many have talked about rear end sag on the Ram. Personally, I don't experience this problem becuase I use a weight distribution hitch, a must for a trailer of this size.
Bottom line, I used to be a big GM fan - no longer! I did my homework, checked it twice and without a doubt picked the right truck for the job and I also feel I got the best truck for the money. Nothing personal about the other brands, but after test driving them - it was a no brainer!
