Default What's 2 mpg worth to you?

Just a random thought.

Short blurb in the newspaper the other day about a local inventor who was getting patents on a technology, independently tested by at least 8 places, to give a legit 14% increase in gas mileage. Since all testing was done on trucks, it basically came out to 2 mpg.

Can't seem to find anything about it on the net as of right now, curious what that would be worth to people if it did come to market. Honestly, I doubt I'd buy it, since I don't put on enough miles to care about 2 mpg...but if I end up using it for the biz, that'll change.

I mean extra miles per gallon is extra no matter how much, but depends on the price and hassle it will take to get it.

Oops, posted in 4th gen...but guess it doesn't matter. Looks like it goes inline with the gas line, from the pic. Here's the story.

2 mpg is a good amount, worth a good chunk of change. I think it would be worth at least a couple hundred dollars, but the actual cost depends on what it takes to make it and put it in.

If it really works, don't you think they could sell the patent to one of the auto companies. With the pressure to increase fleet mpg, it would be a no brainer.

truck @ 16 mpg = $14, 062 for 100,000 miles @ $2.25 a gallon
truck @ 18 mpg = $12, 500 for 100,000 miles @ $2.25 a gallon - saves $1,562

truck @ 16 mpg = $18,750 for 100,000 miles @ $3.00 a gallon
truck @ 18 mpg = $16,666 for 100,000 miles @ $3.00 a gallon - saves $2084

sooo.. how much is $2000 worth to you?

An extra 60 miles on the tank would be nice.

How many years to get to 100K? 10 years = $200/year savings (less than $17/month), 5 years = $400 savings. You can do just anything with statistics to try and prove a point. If mpg was critical I would not have purchased a truck. Would I like to see better mileage, you bet. Most after market mpg devices that have come out have been debunked. If it really works and is practical to produce, you would think some car manufactor would use it in the near future. The pressure is on to produce higher fleet mpg.

It depends on how much it costs, what is the technology, etc. I am not going to spend a whole lot on something that won't save me any money in the long run.

If I want to save gas, I will drive the wifey's Pacifica that gets 16-17 in the city and 20-21 on the highway. I got the truck to pull my Dart in a year or two and like everybody else I got a great deal.

With that said, if it is cheap and easy, sure, I'd love 2 more mpg!

On a truck that only gets 12 MPG, an extra 2 MPG is quit a bit, on a car that gets 30 MPG, no 2 MPG isn't much.
