Is it really a 32 Gallon Tank?
So after putting close to 4k miles on my truck, I thought I'd ask if anyone else is having a similar experience. I noticed from the first time I filled up that it seems like it takes fewer gallons to fill up a 32 gallon tank than it should. If the low fuel light is on and the range to empty counter is ready 50-75 miles, by my guess it should take about 28-29 gallons to fill up, but instead it usually takes 25-27 gallons. Does this seem strange to anyone else?
I thought the same thing with my tank, its also 32 gallons. The most I've ever put in mine was 29 gallons and that was running on "LOW FUEL" for a while. When it starts to say LOW FUEL, I get about 26-27 gallons in.
I let mine run down to the "low fuel" warning (which is not the same as the low fuel warning icon, it's when the range indicator falls to zero). I was able to get about 28.5 gallons in. I would suspect it's a 32 gallon tank (someone could sue or force a buyback if not), but it must have a 3-4 gallon reserve to account for the fact that the tolerance of the sensors for the fuel level warning have some variation and they do not want someone to run out when it still shows some range on the EVIC. That would seriously pi$$ some people off.
Ya, can't always believe what you see on the gauge or EVIC. My 03 SAAB said I had 40 miles left till empty with the light on though. Got about 15 miles and she was out of gas, atleast not enough for the fuel pick-up to suck any. My rule of thumb now is to fill when the light comes on or before. Usually fill up at 1/4 tank anyway.
