8200 miles and on 2nd oil change
Oil Change Indicator- Reset
The vehicle is equipped with an engine oil change indicator system. The “Oil Change Required” message flashes in the EVIC display for approximately ten seconds after a single chime has sounded, to indicate the next scheduled oil change interval. The engine oil change indicator system is duty cycle based, which means the engine oil change interval may fluctuate depending upon your personal driving style.
Unless reset, this message continues to display each time you turn the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position. To turn off the message temporarily, press and release the Menu button. To reset the oil change indicator system (after performing the scheduled maintenance) perform the following procedure:
- Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position. Do not start the engine.
- Fully press the accelerator pedal slowly three times within ten seconds.
- Turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” position.
NOTE: If the indicator message illuminates when you start the vehicle, the oil change indicator system did not reset. If necessary, repeat this procedure.
The oil change indicator on this truck doesn't seem too smart. The owner's manual recommends 6,000 miles between changes, but the message kicks in on most people around 3,000 miles or even less sometimes. I change my oil every 5,000 miles on all of my vehicles. My Yukon and Silverado always has about 15-20% of their oil life left, but not my 09 Ram. The GMs use a program that measures the number of starts and time run to calculate oil life. What does Dodge use on the 09 Ram? I read somewhere that there was a viscosity sensor. I doubt that. A few years back someone was using a photo cell to measure opacity to determine how dirty the oil was. I just drive my 5000 miles and reset the indicator when it comes on at the 3000 mile mark. 90% of my driving is highway on cruise, can't imagine why the indicator would come on so early.
Changed oil on Ram 1500 w/ hemi at 1200 mi. the light came on at 2600, so I am sure it is not assessing the oil, but comming on at an interval related to the driving habits from day one, Short trips etc. I checked the oil it was fine, and only had 1400 miles on it, so my intention is to put Mobil 1 in at 3000mi and try to go 5000 miles on the oil.
I am making the change this week. Two auto parts big boys are having a sale on Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 EP.

I changed my factory oil at 3000 miles. I used Mobile1 oil and a Mopar filter ( not buying into the $14 filter game even if it is superior) The oil message indicator came on at 5600 miles.
I agree that the system is monitoring your driving habits from day 1 and not analyzing the oil viscosity, which is a drag. I reset it and will ignore it and change my oil every 5k - 6k miles.
