Aftermarket Overhead DVD player, anyone?
I am doing a pretty long road trip next month and I think I better get an overhead DVD player for the kids. Has anyone added one yet? If so, pictures? I've been looking at a few including the Alpine PKG-RSE2. Can anyone offer any advise on this player or any other player?
I just bought and installed head rest DVD players online and installed them both myself .... $250~ About an hour to install with no mods to the truck except the 4 wires I spliced into the rear cigarette lighter power lines. They came preinstalled in the replacement headrests and can run together or can be used as two separate dvd units for movies, music and games. The Players are Sony brand and the pictures are great!!!!!! The color doesnt match PERFECT on the seats but does match the door and seat belt trim perfect so they still fit the scheme. My daughter loves them!

I bought an overhead DVD player and installed it myself. I got a 14.1" monitor with built in DVD player made by Pyle and this thing works great. I have had no trouble with it and the screen is LCD HD. My daughter loves this thing cause it not only folds down but it also swivels 180 degrees. I would highly recommend this DVD player. With it being a 14.1" screen it is plenty big enough. Just don't expect to see out of your rear view mirror when it is down. But even with that it is still very nice and installation was a breeze. The hardest part was trying to get the headliner to come down. Hope that this helps. I have some pics of my truck in the "post pics of your truck" thread. The pics are kinda small so if you want some bigger ones just give me your email address and I will send you some better pics.
I bought the one from Dodge when I bought my truck. The display is nice and comes with two wireless headphones. My only beef with this setup is that when you try to play it through the speakers it sounds distorted. I rarely do that anyways because I'd rather listen to music than cartoons. I would definitely be cheaper though to get the ones that attach to the headrests.
Just my 2 cents.

The temp units are a rear pain in the ***. I had a set before the head rests units. Between the straps and cords it was too much. I have three kids and the DVD is used fairly often. The bag units or strap type work good if you are only going to use them a few times.

Putting the overhead DVD player was easy to install...I would say it took me about 2 hours to install and that is with running the wires and putting the headliner back together...I love having this DVD player instead of the headrest..I didn't wanna have different color headrest and the stock headrests are just too tall for the sreens that I wanted..But either way I am very happy with choice that I made..I only paid $300 for the system...
I also considered the Alpine you asked about originally. I think it's a very nice system, so I think you would do well with it. I have the built in DVD headrest units in my wife's BMW and while it's nice to have 2 screens (and 2 DVD players so they can watch different things) we have discovered they almost always end up watching the same thing. For that reason, I ended up going with an overhead 12.1" unit. While the Alpine was certainly high on my list, the extra 2 inches and cost of only about $325 was a huge factor for me. I ended up getting the Sirius SCV1 Backseat TV also for $105 brand new and installed it along with the DVD player. I have it wired into the front screen on the factory RER NAV radio so my wife can watch the DVD player and it plays through the factory speakers or my wife can watch another DVD up front using the built in factory unit (THANKS MYGIG!) while the kids watch something else. We went on 3 trips this year, and my wife watched Slumdog Millionaire on the front screen and my kids watched iCarly and SpongeBob on the Sirius Sat. TV, although my wife has gotten sucked into watching those shows too. Total investment less than $700 including the ALLGIG, DVD/LCD Combo, and SCV1. Considering the factory system would only have a 9 inch screen and would still require the ALLGIG to duplicate the functionality I have now, I saved about $1300.
The problem with the temp units that you hang on the headrests is messy jumbles of wires and the reviews I have read on them (see BestBuy) says none of them last very long.

I did the same thing. Installation was easy. I got the 9" version for 325.00. I was considering the roof mount but decided it was more than I wanted to tackle for installation. Plus I can remove the headrests at any time with no issues. My only issue is the headrest poles don't fit snug. I got the tan color. 90% color match.
