I just called my dealer about switching to synthetic at our oil change and they didn't recommend it. She said it would cost over $100 and the techs wouldn't do it in their own cars. Seems like it would be the opposite.

My oil change light comes on at 2500 miles religiously. I drive mostly on the freeway during the week and on the city streets on weekends. So I don't know why some oil change lights go 10,000 miles, 5,000 miles or mine 2,500 miles. With all my freeway driving I'd think that that would extend my oil life, who knows? I just go ahead and change it every 5,000 miles - easy to determine - just 2 oil change notices.

Mine has come on at just a bit over 6,000 miles each time. It is mostly driven on a 50 mile loop to work each day on 55 MPH roads. On weekends it makes a 120 mile loop where I then tow the boat (around 5,000 pounds) anywhere from a couple of miles to 50 miles. I'll see if the winter weather changes it (no boat towing). Not many short trips here at all. I would like to know what logic the system is using e.g. engine hours vs. RPM vs. time or does it have a sensor that is looking at oil contamination.

Mine has come on twice at 2600 miles both times.
I drive about 85% on the highway @ 65 to 80 mph and about 15% in a congested So. Cal city.
I asked the dealer about this early notice and they said that they checked the sensor and it is working properly.........
I can see the first oil change being @ 2600 mi but there is NO good reason for the second "change oil" notice to come on at such low mileage.
From now on I'm going to change the oil at about 4000 to 5000 mile intervals.

Man...$100+??? Find a new stealership!!! LOL. Synthetic Oil at Walmart at 22.00 for 5qts X 3 = 15 qts plus 2 Pureone Filters at $7 plus about 30 minutes total time results in 2 oil changes at my house for ~$85 with tax. They probably charge what..$35 for a regular oil change so that would be $70 at the dealer, unless there is a special...no thanks!!!

Mobil 1 is $10 a quart or more here in Canada. So $70 just for oil, $5 for a filter.
