Default thinking about new ram, have a towing question

alright so heres the deal i currently have an 05 f150 fx4 crew short box, thinking out upgrading to a different truck and like the dodges. i'd love a diesel but doesn't appear to be in the cards. my trailer is a trail lite tl32bh dry it is 6139#, max fully loaded could be 8791#, i highly doubt i'd pack 2600# into this trailer, so lets say loaded is 7500#, probably on the high side but oh well. will a 1500 crew pull this my f150 is about 200# over its gvwr with this trailer and weight distribution hitch. hitch weight is 791# dry. i know i'm likely looking toward a 2500. cargo in the truck will be me, wife, 2 kids 2 dogs, lets say 500# and likely a canopy on the back. any help would be greatly appreciated

IMHO, you are pushing the towing limit. I know our trucks can tow more but the ratings are what they are...

My little Jeep Commander I got rid of for this BIG truck had a higher towing capacity.. go figure... with that being said, the truck handles the weight much better than my Commander ever could have thought about....

I only tow max 6K ish (Jeep on a trailer) uut it seems like you have the potential to go over...I suggest having the artillery there when you need it , i.e a 2500.

With that being said, I wish I could have a 2500. I could have got one but I just stomach the ride quality for as much driving that I do VS the little towing I do may be 8 to 10 time a year. I can get through on a 1500 and have a much more comfy daily commute...

I never had a pick up that has the ride quality of my new Ram. It is predictable on the highway, it doesn't bounce or fishtail when you hit bumps or feel like it wants to change lanes. Thank you jesus for the rear coils!

I dont know how often you tow but I could not see having something uncomfy the other 355 days a year when not towing. If you tow very often, it may be worth it for you...This is just my opinion, but the 2500 Ram that I drove was not pleasant as compared to the new 1500.

i don't tow all that often, for the most part the trailer sits at the inlaws land 160 acres treed with a creek good little free camping spot, but i'd like the ability to say ok lets go to the mountains or lets hitch up and head to wherever and have the truck to do so, like i said my f150 pulls it great but i am over the numbers and the ride isn't the best on my current truck. thanks again for the posts

You gotta look at what options your dodge would have, 17" wheels, 3.92 or 3.55... Look at GVWR what you'd be interested in, then combine the GVWR of the truck and your trailer together. Then combine the curb weight (plus a few hundread pounds, for fun) of your truck and teh weight of your trailer together. And if it's under the combined GVWR, then you are safe... Your towing under what it's rated, therefore, WARRANTY approved, and braking should be within the laws and safety specs... Might be a lil more wear and tare but it's always gonna cost more to enjoy your time off ...

My $0.05 (inflation)

Hemi,3.92 gear,2wd,17 inch tire/wheel and the Dodge will work ok for what you are doing.

If they want to sell you the truck they will let you bring your camper in and pull it with the 1500. That is what I did. I was deciding between the 1500 hemi and 2500 diesel. I have a 28SSL light that comes in about 1000lbs lighter than you. I would love to have the diesel but the hemi pulls it just fine.

For the record I get about 9 mpg without Diablo and have been getting 10.6-10.8 with the diablo.
(These are tow miles)

the truck would be a crew 4x4, we get some bad winters in alberta. probably want the 3.92 and 17s. i'm still lost in all the gvwr numbers because most times it says you can not exceed your trucks gvwr but i'd be over that but still within the gcwr. so what do you go by?

I have a rcsb hemi with 20s/3.55s and I pull a 6000lb trailer twice a week for about 150 miles. Power wise the hemi does a great job. Mileage wise, I get 12mpg towing which is what I got with my 07 vmax on the highway not towing. As far as suspension goes, the second you get home from the dealer order the airlift airbags. My tongue weight is around 1200lbs, and with the airbags at 35psi the truck sits just below level. Withought the bags it is horrible. I would also recommend the 20s not just for looks, but also the shorter sidewall. The short sidewall with an all terrain aftermarket tire should help to minimize the trailers sway. Im sure everyone here will agree, the goodyear HPs SUUUUUCCCCKKKK. Inflated to the max psi, the sidewall almost touches the ground they bulge out so much.
