Why do fog lamps turn off when high beam on?
Yep, It is against the law to run fog lights and high beams in all states, territories of the US and Canada.
In fact all traffic codes state you must dim or turn off fog lights - driving lights when approaching on coming traffic, the same as if your high beams are on.

thanx for the inputs,
its just that i live in 200acres of land
& it would be nice to have extra light out
there. i drive on dark back roads for about
30 miles, thats why i need them. because when
u r in the city u dont need them.
So how can we do it 2 get the fogs to work?
AZDodgeHemi, how did u do it?
Is there anyone here that has programed them?
thanx,
Are they actually Fog lights though? The difference in fog and driving lights are the way the beam is spread and the color of the lenses? That's what I was told a while back.
And I agree, as long as you dim to oncoming traffic, what's the difference. I meet people with brights all the time and they won't dim even when you flick the stick. That too is illegal.

FOG lights are for driving in FOG. They are low to the ground and illuminate the road under the fog blanket, with a wide, low beam pattern. The higher-positioned main lamps are high enough that they will always hit the fog, and even normal headlights reflect back. High beam just makes it a whole lot worse. Since only a cretin would drive in fog with high beam on, if high beam is set, fog lamps are inhibited. If fog lamps are on, and highbeam is selected from normal mains, then the fog lamps go out, as you are obviously no longer in fog.
It's the same kind of lock out idea as being unable to remove the key when the transmission is in D. Only a cretin would try and take the key out (and thus activate the steering lock) while the vehicle is moving.
I can see the OP's problem though, and the answer is in auxiliary driving lamps rather than fog lamps.

Hello AZDodge,
When you say that you've modified, have you found a way to make bypass the CAN-BUS? I was thinking of trying to get the foglights to come on as a pseudo-drl, but after poking around at the switch and finding unusual voltages, I don't think I should try it alone. Thought about modifying a switch, but I'm not sure that this would "fool" the computer...
Thanks,
Joe

It doesn't matter what the law says, it's your truck. As long as you dim them when a car is coming, all is well. You need to be able to see at night, and the fog lights make a world of difference, especially when coupled with the high beams. Yeah, yeah, I don't care about what all you law abiding types have to say.
To the OP - for off road conditions - and off road only - a set of KCs would be the far better choice than attempting to use the fogs.
Could always just get an extra light bar instead...mount it either under / on the front bumper, or on the roof...or add one of those bed-style roll bars and mount the lights on that... I like the Ibis-Tek light bars they make for the route clearance trucks for the military...bright as **** and light up a huge area. Not sure how much they cost or if they're even available to civilians, but...if you know anyone in the military they're fairly easy to acquire
Edit: They DO make civilian equivalents, found here :

Says contact them for ordering info though, so still no idea how much they cost. I know they work well though, and stand up to quite a bit of abuse. Wouldn't be too hard to paint the lightbar to match your truck either.
