Default Thinking about undercoating my 09.

Has anyone of you undercoated their truck? The reason I ask is even though my truck is new I have noticed some surface rust, nothing major, on the rear transaxel and a few other components. I heard this is a natural process for this type of metal. Anyway, during the summer I drive down to the coast and cruise the beach to wade fish so being around the saltwater or air is my concern. Would just washing the underside of the truck after a visit to the beach be a thing to do? Just want to protect my investment. Thanks.

I undercoated one of my old dakota's. The frame was rusted out so I took the wire brush to it and sprayed it with that Rustoleum Undercoat Hammer finish spray paint. It turned out good. I live at the beach too. I thought new vehicles were already undercoated, but I see you said axle. I say just wire brush the spot and spot spray it.

One thing I noticed about my 09 vs my 05 is the frame itself is painted much better. The rear axle still sucks. I plan to just paint the rear axle by hand. xfer case will rust as well as parts of the drive shaft.

Default oil spray

I had my 09 sport rustchecked, it is a oil based rustproof, if done every year they will pay to have any rust repaired for the life of the vehicle

yes. im hoping to get back to work soon enough before the full bore salting starts in MI.

look for a grease undercoating. my father, and i have had these done on every vehicle we have bought. makes a mess in the summer. but totally worth it. he had an astro van done. after 13yrs. it was one of the only ones running around without the typical rust spots on it.. best $$$ you can spend hands down. (if you live somewhere prone to rotting...)

I live across from MI. in Canada and well I have always gotten the dealer rust proofing and I think it is too much, although I never paid for it, I decided to try oil spray, messy to work under there just to run a wire from front to back your arms are black. Once a year for a touch up. Well worth the money, I get the dripless, for the first time I remove the spare tire, and the plastic rear wheel wells so they could get up in the box good, next time just the spare with come down I like to inspect the cable and make sure the tire is tight anyway air pressure too.

they spray that liquid magnesium salt **** on the roads here, when it dries it turns to white powder and coats your vehicle, can't be good for it at all.

Default Great to hear from others on this subject.

Hey thanks for your own experiences to share. There is a shop down the street that will charge around 400 to 500 dollars for undercoating, still undecided, my personal funds being the main factor. However I would like to know more about what type oil you use and how to apply to the bottom, so do you coat all the metal underneath? Also I like the idea about cleaning the rust and spot proofing. Some great information.

ok. from my experiences. GREASE is the best. yes they spray the frame, all sheetmetal surfaces. the place i go to drills one hole in each door sill to shoot the inside of the fenders that you cant get to any other way. then put a rubber gromet in there. no one can tell its not stock!

the oil treatments. aka zeibert in MI suck. they "dry up" or whatever leaving the vehicle with no protection over time. like i said. a good grease coating will last the life of the vehicle. personal experience with one that was 13yrs... before selling it.

oh, in MI a shop will grease coat the bottom, inside bumpers, halfway up inside doors, hood, fenders etc. on a "brand new " ram full size for $280.
