I bet the transfer case lever was stiff or stuck being the first time you ever engaged it. It's like a little pull **** but controlled by a power actuator to select the 4x4 mode you want. non powered actuators don't have that problem cause you're using your hand to move the lever for the transfer case. We just have a fancy **** (lazy man) option to void this, but can cause issues due to power actuators only being so strong to do a simple job. If grease/dirty combo or even the gears not matching up can give us problems, but with the old lever mode, you would just muscle through it and get that lever in to place one way or another... i'd say you're good to go.

Hopefully it will clear up on it's own, its like it tries to engage but can't the first time, turn the key off and try it again and it works.

If you can, have a buddy move the selector while you're under the truck watching the pull ****. See what the bind is, just watch the transfer case and you'll see it moving. Not to worry, the truck can be in park when you do this, selecting 4HI and going back to 2HI.

As for an update to the problem I have, The first time I try to engage any 4 wheel drive setting the light flashes on the chosen setting and the SERV 4x4 light on the dash turns on, I pull over shut the truck off, start up try it again and it works perfectly and will continue to do so all day long, probably tried it 10 times yesterday without an issue. Its like something has to warm up first before it starts to work, maybe something is stiff or tighter than what it should be.
the 5 position transfer case is on all the sports right?

No I have 2WD 4HI 4LO Neutral and I have a Sport...in Canada

I think the Auto will give you like 30 percent front and 70 rear, I don't think your truck will ever go into 2wd trully. I have a Durango R/T said 2 wd but in the snow if I mash the pedal the front wheels engaged and spun like the back. Now this Ram 2wd is 2wd and is you turn of the ESP you lose some traction, if you turn the key forward while driving you lose all traction the ESP totally shuts off that way only. Stupid, should say ESP off (sorta). Like in a Charger or Challenger with the Hemi does it do that or do they just not put ESP my sons Avenger does not have it.

I have 2010 Sport and it only has 2wd 4Hi 4 Lo... I didn't even know about the 5 position transfer case until reading the Owners Manual. Was this an option?

Usually it's the Laramies that have the 5 position transfer case.

Canadian dealer's 2010 brochure shows it standard on a Sport, all the ones I looked at had it.

Sorry, I should've said 2009. Two post above have sports and no 5 position transfer case, but every laramie I looked at had it standard on the lot, whether it's standard or not?
