Power Step Problems
I saw the other day that they had the updated instructions on their website with the new parts. I'll have to give them a call about mine and see if they can fix me up with the heavier hardware. Mine seem to work fine but there is a slight bit of flex. Not too bad but the new support looks like it should firm it up.
I also dealt with Electric Step. Best price and had great service. Answered all my questions before and after the sale.

I contacted Amp and they sent me the update kit. They require a credit card on file. They wont charge it if you return the removed motor linkage assembly. The instructions have you removing and switching parts from driver to passenger sides. More and improved mounting supports are provided. There is a noticeable improvement to stability and support. And the steps retract better. Especially on the passenger side where I had the most problem. However, when we moved the passenger side idler linkage assembly to the rear drivers side. Now that part of the step hangs down just about 1/2" to 3/4" from full up. Hardly noticeable, but since I can see a difference from passenger to driver side. I notice it. So I'm hoping when I contact them again they'll send me another idler assembly.
BTW, since the motors are moved from the rear to the front. The new instructions don't tell you, you'll have to reroute the wiring and reverse the wiring connections. So if you're steps come out only when the door is closed. Reverse the leads.
• Motor polarity reversed. Exchange location of wires going into motor plug. (Swap orange and white wires in motor plug.)

My instructions show a revision date of 12.31.09, seems pretty recent but still 3 months old? Oh, wait I see there is a 2/12/2010 version of these instructions that includes a rear support brace for the idler bracket, looks like there are 4 more parts included for that (2 each).
I also notice that both the old and the NEW instructions are contradictory; on one page it says:
"NOTE: Driving Linkage Assemblies
(with motor) mount in the front; Idler
Assemblies mount in the rear."
... and later it says:
"The jogs in the lower part of the linkages point toward one another, as shown, Drive (motor) Linkage
in the Rear and Idler Linkage in the front. Note: Linkage position described in parts list on page 3."
I’m assuming based on this thread that the former is correct, put the motors in the front and fix-up the wiring to match. I’m going to go back over this tread and read it again…

John,
Definitely put the motors in the front, idlers in the rear. It works much better and they should have sent you the correct arms to make sure everything fits. The wiring instructions that DwRam posted are correct. They take a while to install but totally worth the effort. Let us know how it goes.

I called the main number and got ahold of Tech Support. It was actually one of the development engineers. The customer service over there is top notch. They will take care of what ever you need. As far as I know, they are one of the only companies out there that will still warranty a product even if it is installed by the customer.
You know I hate to whine but..... I paid $1200 for these steps, I don't care how good the customer service is. It seems like a major PITA to have to practically un-install and re-install the brackets and rewire everything when it should have been right the first time. Am I the only one that thinks this way? I think that Amp owes me for my time.
Well, on that level, I agree. It was a major PITA to have to do everything and my wife was none to happy with me for spending an entire Saturday out in the garage jacking with these things. But, on the flip side, I like to try to do things myself and rarely does it ever come out perfect the first time.
Just got off the phone with amp-research, one little extra piece of info I learned was that the MegaCab’s (2010) don’t need the extra reinforcing strap on the idler linkage that the new instructions describe. So the stock step should be fine. I also didn’t need the new motor because there was enough room on the passenger’s side front to clear the motor.
And in case there is any doubt, install your motors in the front and just switch the wires in the plugs. It’s really not bad at all.

I just installed the AMP power steps and they will not work. Called AMP tech and they talked me through some trials and thier wiring seems correct and they say it is in my truck wiring. I noticed that the dome light does not come on since I put the steps on. Any ideas??? Thanks
