Default Buying Tips

In the market for a 2010 1500. I'm looking for a Sport or Laramie Quad or Crew.

To all those who already bought theirs, I am looking for some buying tips. Do you get better deals from on the lot trucks? I was going to order, but if I can get a ridiculous deal from a truck on the lot, I may do that.

Basically I am looking for how much off MSRP could you get and how did you get it? Thank you so much!

Edit: All buying stories are welcomed. I haven't bought a new car since 1999 (Dakota).

You will almost always get a better deal from a truck on the lot. The dealer wants to ger rid of his inventory.
I bought mine last March when employee pricing was in effect. I walked onto the dealer's lot just looking at colors and he made me a deal I couldn't walk away from. He gave me every deal, every xtra I asked for. The clincher was the guaranteed sight unseen trade-in money he offered on my truck. A truck I was having trouble giving away privately.

Nowadays you can almost always find close to what you want on a lot somewhere. You may have to scarifice an option or 2.

If you have an exact model with specific options that you have to have then your better option may be to order it. From a money side buying one off the lot will be the better option.

Look around before you order.

I almost feel a little guilty for the deal I got on the last two new Chryslers I bought, they are really dealing on these trucks. I usually have a bit of buyer's remorse after buying a new car/truck but between the new Commander and new Ram 1500 I just bought I feel pretty good about the deals on both. There are three Dodge dealers in my area and the two others were 3-4k more then this one on the same trucks so dont be scared to shop dealers.

I always buy off the lot, I have ordered a few cars here and there in the past and it just seemed like too much of a hassle compared to finding one on a lot - plus driving away the same day you want to buy has its advantages.

I just told the dealership, 'I want 4wd, hemi, inexpensive, and not red (sorry to you red fans out there).' They found a couple different trucks that they could dealer trade for and gave me the price. They dropped off the truck where I work and I signed the papers here - never visited the dealership.

If I could have got a better deal I would have opted for a Crew Cab...

I always order. I am pretty picky about my trucks and they aren't offering any killer deals currently. I couldn't find a sport on a lot within 300 miles in the color I wanted, let alone with the options I wanted.

Off the lot I got the truck I wanted plus a couple options cheaper then I could have ordered the one I wanted. So, the deals are on the lot. I got my second color choice but luckily I am not too picky there, it had to be gunmetal or silver. I got silver. I also got an upgraded seat package and remote start that were not in the build I wanted so it was hard to complain. Do shop around but keep in mind if the hassle of warranty work is worth it to have to drive to your dealership, if you could have paid 500 more and got it right next door?

I guess that's the real question at hand here, how do you know you're getting a good deal? What do you use to compare/guage/research/investigate the pricing?

When I ordered mine I got $500 below dealer invoice price, because my company has an affiliate program with Chrysler. But even then, some say dealer invoice prices doesn't mean anything either, ok, so then I ask: "so then ask what IS the frame of reference?".
