Smile Why I got the Ram

I was a longtime GMC truck owner and switched to a Ram. Here is why;

1) Fords always had weak engines and terrible front end suspensions. Maybe now the fixed their suspension problems but I needed a better engine.
2) Chevy/GMC is long in the tooth. They make great engines and transmissions but everything else sucks. I got rid of my 200 Sierra because when I looked at the 2009 chevy models they looked about the same. I did not want the 5.3, I needed more power but did not hear great things about the 6.0 or 6.2. Besides the deals were not that good. My old truck had a bad fuel gauge, leaking rear end, tachometer that was sticking, sagging rear suspension, rode terribly on the bouncy freeways of LA, parking brake was worthless, the blower motor failed, the 3.73 LSD rear end wore out fast, the loud piston slap and the truck was not that great on gas. The engine and trans were great but I needed more towing power.
3) Nissan - need I say anything about that?
4) Toyota trucks seems like the best truck but I couldn't see myself paying top dollar for the tundra. I saw where folks had problems with the chassis and ride and my friends that own them love the trucks but hate the milage.

So I own a 2009 Ram CC with the 3.21 axle. So far, so good, the lifetime warranty, great ride, OK milage, and great deal make me pretty happy. I hope I will not be disappointed. I test drove enough trucks that I was not expecting a rocket like some folks on this website. I looked at the torque curve and knew going into the purchase that the numbers are deceiving since the curve is steep and not as flat as other brands.

So I am happy with my truck.

1970 Kaiser 4WD Wagoneer

You wanted more towing power with your GMC so you bought a truck with a 3.21 axle ratio? I think you just shot yourself in the foot.

I only Tow a 3500 LB Light weight trailer, but it is tall and wide. My 200 GMC had the 4.8 engine (270 horses and 280 or so LB/Ft of torque) with the 3.73 axle. Whenever I had strong head winds and any incline, the little 4.8 couldn't keep up with traffic. The 3.21 was all that the dealer had on the lot. So I called 4WD wholesalers and I can change the gears and get an LSD for about $1300. Even with the 3.21 I think I will be OK but I am taking a trip soon and if I have to I will swap the gears

That truck is gonna be WORKIN with 3.21's. It really only has one option - to stay in second gear, second gear runs to about 105 with 3.21's. I would have never bought a truck that I intended to tow with, having 3.21 gearing and a crew cab at that....

The truck will be fine...

If anyone has ever looked into it, 3rd and 4th gear are so close to 2nd. Even at near redline the RPM's don't drop much when going 2nd to 3rd.

We have the 3.21 as well and it's not a big deal - it tows plenty fine. If you do a lot of highway driving then that's the ratio for you.

I towed an open car trailer and 3000lb car (4500lbs total) over the mountains here with a 2001 GMC 4.8 2wd without the tow package (3.23 gears) and that had a 4 speed auto. Yes it spent some time in 3rd gear up the bigger mountains but I towed every weekend with it. Sure the 5.3/3.73 would have been better but I'm pretty sure the 3.21/hemi/5speed will do just fine with 3500lbs.

If not its easy enough to change on a 2wd.

All this gear talk makes me wonder why they sold Sport versions with 355's. I assumed I got 392's till I was driving it for a while and 4L minivans jumping me in the hole then after I get around 15mph it is adios m f. You can feel the torque when you kick it in the *** when you are moving and going up like a ramp on to an expressway you can be doing double the speed of the cars before you hit he top. Crazy.

Crew lounge chatter:

One pilot blurts out: " Man I landed that baby down twice today like a butterfly touching down on a lilly pad with sore feet."

Another sez: "That's nuthin' I did three in a row."

Me: "If'n ah hear Four in a row, sumbody in here's a liar."

Back to the Ram: I get 25MPG with a 4.56 in town, towing, on the highway at 100MPH....and here's a picture o' mah girlfriend
