Default New Ram owner w/ brake controller question

I am new to the board and a first time poster. I just picked up my new 2010 Ram 1500 quad cab. I know that the topic of the brake controller has already been discussed but I need a little clarification. I paid $134 at my dealer for what they are calling the brake controller. I asked questions about what it is as I was under the impression that it was going to be a pre-wired plug harness. In my mind I thought I was going to take my Prodigy controller from my old truck and I would go out and buy a plug that ran from the back of the Prodigy to the plug socket under the dash. I thought I was paying for that wiring harness. When I asked the parts department what I needed they said just go out and buy any controller and it will come with all the wiring that you need. They made it sound like they were going to hard wire it for me. Does this make sense? My problem is that I don't have the original wiring for the Prodigy because I just bought a plug and play kit that worked with my truck. Can anybody shed some light on this for me?

The 2010 has an available brake controller that installs right in the dash above the parking brake. It would be just plug in. If they tell you that they can't get it for you they are full of it. Some places are telling customers if they did not order it with the truck they can't have it. Othersare selling it to them

If you wanted to use your Prodigy, all you would need is the adapter harness from them not Dodge. Should be about $10. Just be sure that it is for the 2010 truck as the older ones have a different connector. One end will fit into the truck, the other to the Prodigy connector. If you buy the harness from Dodge, it will have the truck end connector but nothing for the controller end. That will be a problem since your controller has a plug on it and not wires. So your best bet is to buy the correct harness from Teshonka if you go that route.

For $134, that has to be the Dodge factory controller. You would also need the bezel to mount it into and 3 screws. As long as your truck was not a very early build 2010, it should be plug and play.

Thanks for the responses. I was able to locate the original wiring that came with the Teshonka. It has a plug on one end that goes into the back of the unit and four loose wires on the other. I would rather use the factory controller because it would be such a cleaner installation. The prodigy will just get in my way because I am fairly tall. Your right $134 would be about the cost for the integrated controller but I don't think it is. It was one of those situations where I was done making the deal and I told them I need the brake controller. I just wanted to have the electric brakes work so I was willing to pay what ever it took to get it done. I'll pursue this a little more with the dealer. Thanks!

Another new owner here.

I think you should figure out what you got for your money, but in the meantime, there are a couple of ways to use your Tekonsha. My new 2011 includes a "jack" under the dash, near where the OEM controller mounts (above the e-brake release). You can purchase a pigtail from your dealer (though I understand it used to be in the glovebox of some trucks) that matches that plug with 4 wires on the other end. With your existing Tekonsha pigtail (Tekonsha plug on one end, 4 wires on the other), connect the two sets of wires to each other, plug up, and you're good to go.

Or, buy the Tekonsha/Dodge adapter that comes with plugs on both ends. I'm going to see if I can pick up one of these locally this week - if not, they seem to be about $20 with shipping at places like etrailer.com. YMMV, but I think we need Tekonsha part number 3021-P (http://www.tekonsha.com/content/prod...45&part=3021-P) for 2010-2011 Rams (see Application tab on link).

I'm planning on Dremel-ing (TM) my factory "pocket" to fit my P3. I'll post pics when I'm done.

Dave

This is the route I went with on my 09 and it works perfect and looks better than just cutting out the current pocket to make the P3 work.

I just bought a 2012 last week and ordered the factory integrated controller. My truck only had one of the required 2 plugs to install it, so I used a pdf file from *********.com forums to make my own 3-wire harness and it works great. I read there were some issues with software if you have the EVIC dash (info panel between the tach and speedo) in your truck, but mine doesnt have it, so no issues there.
