Aftermarket Backup Camera.
Salut TurboGPZed!
The camera is a standard CCD keyhole camera with Infrared capability for night use. They are available all day long on eBay for $65-$100. The GPS is a Garmin Nuvi 5000. It has a yellow RCA Video IN port. One of the features of the GPS is the ability to show the video IN picture instead of the navigation picture, and you choose how it decides which image to show. I have mine set to display the backup camera image whenever the image signal is present. In order to get power to the CCD camera, I tapped into the reverse light wire. When I shift in reverse the camera gets powered up, it sends a signal to the video IN port of the GPS, and the GPS switches over automatically to that image.
I also drilled a hole in the dash of my 2 day old truck, directly behind where I have the GPS mounted on the dash, so that I could run wires for power, video in, and the external antenna and not have any wires show from the drivers viewpoint.
I've linked to a couple of pictures of the camera installed into the tailgate handle, and of the image seen from the camera. The image I see is much clearer than what it appears in the picture. There was a lot of glare taking a picture of a picture.

I have a CCD camera also from Ebay, about $40, installed in the tailgate handle location. I'm using the AllGig with a REN radio. Picture quality is great. My issues are that the field of view does not capture the hitch, although I don't haul very often. And the picture is actually too bright at night. IMO the infrared "night vision" is unnecesarry.
Thanks for all the info on this topic. You all have been a great help. I just got done with my set-up. Garmin Nuvi 5000 and XO Vision CMOS back-up camera. Ran wires on driver's side frame-rail and attached to factory wire harness, went into cab via rubber gromet for e-brake. The suction cup mount stick real well to the silver dash bezel. Pretty easy install. Can see my short&long neck hitch(s) easily. Can not see the bumpers but from the bottom of screen (as a guide) it works out to be 4" to bumper. The colors on the camera could be better but the nightvision makes up for it, nice and bright even with no other lights around other than the back-ups. For 30 bucks I was suprised that actually worked. For $189 on the Garmin (CompUSA.com) and $34 (amazon.com) for the camera... pretty close to just getting the factory back-up camera without the $$$ for the needed radio with Nav. My truck came with U-Connect and I-pod controller anyway.
Again, thanks for all the info and answering previous questions..
PS. stay away from Ecost.com... their refurb Nuvi for $125 is not the same as a factory overhauled unit. Got my money back... but it was almost a month and a PITA.

I got it off of FleaBay and the vendor has a web site at

The picture quality has been great, day and night. I got this one...

but it was a lot cheaper back then.

Both in working like a charm. Funny it looks so clear but well when I take a picture it shows up some weird lines on the screen I think the camera is taking to high of resolution I will play, but the diff between the cmos and the ccd's night and day. Very clean and more visiblility, can see edge of bumper but still a good ways out and not fishbowl looking
