14" Magnaflow Too Loud. Suggestions?
I had a 2 chamber flowmaster and that had the worst 2,000-2500rpm drone ever. When on the fwy you would have to yell to carry a conversation. By comparison I can barely hear the magnaflow 14 when cruising on the fwy. But when you get on it that's a different story.
I too have a 14" Magnaflow SI/DO welded on. It drones real bad at certain rpms. I find myself looking for that right rpm that will give less drone. So, I have 3:21 rearend and like to keep my freeway speed around 70-75mph. It's funny how I will let off gas pedal and hit the pedal to adjust for less sound. MSD kick on too much. I may just turn it off with the SC tuner. I too may think about an 18" or 24" in the near future.
I had the Flowmaster 50HD and even though I don't have MDS the thing droned like crazy from about 1800-2200 rpm and with 4.56 gears, that put it right at 70 mph interstate speeds.
Could barely hold a conversation in the cab and forget a cell phone!
Believe it or else, going to a Cherry Bomb QUIETED IT DOWN! The muffler is louder when stomping on the gas than the FM was, but at idle or when cruising is actually quieter and there is no noticeable drone whatsoever...

I had a charger srt8 for several years (the 6.1 doesn't have mds); did a lot of reading about exhaust for both the 6.1 and the 5.7 (in the charger r/t). I remember all the 5.7 guys saying when the mds kicks in the drone can get really bad, dependent on what cat back you bought. Both engines can get drone, mds will make it worse.
The first cat back I put on, a less expensive t409 brand, had drone at 1700-1900...right at 60mph. I sent it back and bought zoomers; they didn't have any drone and sounded awesome.
Zoomers and Corsa are the only exhaust I'm aware of that say they won't drone. I don't recall hearing any complaints from the 6.1 or 5.7 guys with either of those cat back systems. Zoomers are louder than corsa, but corsa seemed to be the top pick for those with mds. Call them both up and see what they have to say about drone and exhaust volume. Zoomers used to have sound bytes on their website.
However, drone and exhaust tone is very subjective!

instead of starting another exhaust topic, i figure ill do it here. I have 10 ram sport with the duals and the rear resonators removed already. Didnt get the sound i hoped for with that mod, so now what would you suggest?? Dont want loud just alittle more sound than what i have now. Maybe a 24 or the 18, and this might be a stupid question lol but when u say 18 or 24 mufflers is that total length or the body length?? And want to go with the magnaflow. Thanks guys
yes the 18 and 24 are the chamber length. I have the 18" magnaflow from mufflex and love it. It is perfect with my 3.55 gears. I have no drone at 60 or 70 mph but that is because of my gears more than he muffler. with the 3.55 i'm runnning about 1450rpms at 60 and around 1700 at 70mph and there is no drone for me at all at those speeds. The 24" magnaflow sounds too close to stock for me so that is why i went with the 18.
jay, do you have the rear resonators removed as well? Thats my biggest worry is the 18'' will be too loud with resonators removed. I tow my camper weekends and dont want it noisy. Ive been searching and havent found someone with the 18 or 24 with the resonators removed yet
mine aren't removed yet but that is in the works for it. I pull a 7x14 enclosed trailer around quite often and have found that if i just lock out 5th gear when i'm going 60mph then the motor is running around around 2200rpm or so. At that rpm there is very little drone under power, my wife has not complained about it yet. It is not bad in the cabin and you dont have to turn up the radio or raise your voice to talk. But I will caution you that a cold air intake will change that. I have the aem intake and at around 2800 to 3200 rpms it has enough drone to rumble the cabin pretty good. But it isn't that often that you run those engine speeds unless you have a heavy trailer or some hills. I love the way it sounds with my setup and the best part is that if I take it easy when the wife is with me then it is only slightly louder than stock.
