Hemi??
Let me start off by saying I do not own a Dodge. I just wanted to ask a question and I figured you guys would know or have an idea. Why is dodge obsessed with putting HEMI on the side of there vehicles? I mean I know the HEMI is short for hemisphere since it is an internal-combustion engine in which the combustion chambers are of hemispherical form. I mean I own the Nissan Altima 3.5SR with the VQ engine, but you don't see Nissan putting that on the side of our cars (it has won wards top 10 engines 2002 through 2007 so they could put it on). I guess its the same with Honda, with there I-VTEC but they are not as bad. So I just wanted an idea.
hemi is a brand name that is highly recognizable.
most engines today have some sort of hemispherical combustion chamber, however dodge gained notoriety using it back in the day. its the same reason they brought back the challenger and charger names.
its all about publicity... and sales show it. Once they switched over from the magnum engines to the hemi, sales rose dramatically.
everyone knows "that thing got a hemi?" ...even people who dont know much about engines know about the hemi name.. thats invaluable when selling a car/truck.
i doubt many 35 year old soccer moms asking.."does that have the VQ engine?"... but if they saw hemi.. they might recognize it as a good brand of engines.
so your answer is simply.. marketing.

same thing as putting V8 badges on, or 5.0 on the side of a mustang it is a engine call out for highly recognized engines a selling point. or when they put 3.5 or 5.4 yes Nissan has put engine callout badges on. Just with a Hemi that is all you need to know, you know it is the bad boy
I see, makes sense I guess. I do see a lot more RAM's and Tundra's than any other trucks around. The Ford F150's are just garbage, but still see a little bit of those around.

I read that a couple of years ago, the "Hemi" take up rate was over 50%, meaning that more than half the vehicles that offered the hemi were sold with the hemi instead of a smaller engine. Think about how many cars and trucks and jeeps that would be!
I agree the RAM is a bit large and gawdy buy some dental floss and wd40 you can remove it, my 09 does not have a huge HEMI sign like the older ones. It is a square little emblem
What is a pet peeve of mine is when all the comparisons to foreign cars are made and then someone gets schooled then even.
I am not impressed with the new Ford Fiesta, it will be grabbed up by young kids with no money and no brains. so it has push button start and voice sync.It is made over seas and they are bragging about that?????? Is that a smart thing to do. I found a place that is doing push buttons starts, I don't think for new vehicles but get this for older ones like my 72 chev.(not foreign, actually it is imported from the US to Canada(my RAM has uconnect and voice recognition and it works fantastic. I am not impressed with the fact this car is made where Japan somewhere in Europe or is it Mexico? I could be wrong but I do recall them advertising where they were made as a selling point. I sure hope people think twice.

Ford puts PowerStroke badges, Chevy and GMC put Duramax badges, and all four wheel drive vehicles have 4x4 plastered on them. As said before, it's all marketing. Chrysler isn't any different than any other company.
Maybe Nissan just isn't as proud of their "VQ" engine as Chrysler is of the Hemi. I know I'm about as big of a motörhead as one can be and I've never heard of a "VQ".

You can always take the badge off....
But think about the main target audience for a Dodge Ram truck - male, 30 - 50, mostly blue collar. The Hemi name/badge gets people's attention.
