Default Alpine dash & roof speakers

Has anyone upgraded the dash and/or roof speakers on the Alpine system? I've seen plenty of threads talking about replacing the sub and all four door speakers, but no mention of the dash and roof. What kind of speakers are used in the dash and roof? Is it even worth replacing them, especially in the dash where it looks like a pain in the butt to get to them even?

I've replaced the left and right speakers in the dash with Infinity speakers and they are awesome. Much more detail than the premium Alpines. They aren't that hard to replace. The grill just pops out and then two bolts hold the speaker in. It's a little awkward but well worth the effort IMHO. I plan on replacing the center eventually but because the Infinity has a crossover dongle there isn't room in the center location to mount it unless some cutting is done.

The speakers in the roof are 2.5" non standard, but luckily are very well made large magnet drivers and sound good enough for me.

Cool, it's good to know you can get to the speakers without taking the whole dash apart. I swapped a set in my wife's Geo Storm once and with that car it was a whole weekend project since you had to take the entire dash apart. I vowed I'd never do that again.

Any chance you remember what size your Infinitys are?

I removed the roof and dash speakers, then took them around town to three different audio shops. None of them had anything for the roof and only one had a replacement for the dash.

Check Crutchfield. There are several choices that will sound great. The Polk's, Infinity's, and Boston Acoustic were all on my short list for the dash. If I were amping the system I would have considered the JL's, but they are not as efficient as the others I mentioned, and therefore wouldn't play as loud with the factory amp.

According to Crutchfield the Infinity's I installed wouldn't fit, but they did. And I have to tell you they sound fantastic. I spent about four hours on the road today with the stereo at nearly full volume and I’m discovering detail in songs that I have listened to thousands of times and never heard.

The roof speakers are actually very good and I think that I’m going to leave them. If you just have to replace them, then I would go with a high quality 1” tweeter that you can adjust to get better imaging.

Sounds like you're still using the factory deck then? So what speakers did you replace? And how much better is the new speaker setup over factory?

Thanks,
Rob

Yes I have a factory REN unit and plan on keeping it until at least the truck is paid for! I have the Alpine premium and I've swapped out the two left and right dash speakers as well as the front door speakers with Infinity Kappa speakers.

Something I forgot to mention is that I put a small square of acoustical foam underneath the dash speakers to help with distortion. And I also stuffed the sub box with some polyfill.

It sounds very clean to me. The bass kicks well and has lots of detail. It still gets overwhelmed during really intense rock passages, and at the extreme low end, but not nearly as bad as before. I like all types of music and everything sounds great especially vocals. Next up is replacing the rear door speakers with Infinity 3-ways, some sound proofing, and then later a JL sub, amp, and custom box.

I hope this answers your question.

Thanks for the details. That sounds like an easy and not too expensive upgrade that might be worth doing. Can you explain more about how you altered the sub with polyfill?

Thanks,
Rob

You have to remove the sub enclosure from the truck. Turn it over and remove the bolt from the bottom. Turn the box back over and remove the screws holding the driver and remove it. Now using polyfill that you got from wally world, stuff as much as you can in there with out forcing it. You want to fill it without compressing it too much, and leave room for the driver. You don't want the polyfill to impair the movement of the driver. Reverse the sequence and enjoy. Don’t expect earth shattering results, you need the door speakers to give you the extra bass to make this system really kick, but it does help!
