Default Oil change interval with synthetic

I put Mobile 1 fully synthetic 5W20 oil in my last change. At exactly 2500 miles my change oil light came one. My light always comes on at 2500 miles but I usually stretch it out to 3000 miles before I change it. This is the first time I used synthetic oil, but I was expecting more miles out of it, like maybe 6000. Any suggestions what I should do? Should I get it changed or just reset the change oil light? My daily comute consists of about 20 miles round trip 25% highway, and I towed my camper about 200 miles this past month.

The computer is just monitoring driving conditions - it doesn't know or care that you have synthetic oil. You might want to talk to your dealer about a computer update, sounds like some of the early build trucks have the light come on at exactly 2500 rather than the "calculated" interval. I've only seen the change oil light once and I replace mine at around 4K miles (29K currently on the truck with a fair amount of towing)

Yeah, definitely find out if you can have the truck flashed to correct the oil change reminder light. It sounds like its not calculating based on driving conditions and its just defaulting to 2500 mile intervals. As for the Mobil 1, I think a good rule of thumb to go by is 2x the life of conventional motor oil.

synthetic should be ran just about as long as convential oil.
i used to run 2500 - 2800 on conventional on my old 95 ram
on my old 2005 i ran synthetic 5w-20 max of 3500 miles

just becuase it says "SYNTHETIC" doesnt mean it can go longer.
rule of thumb is a filter is the main objective needed to be changed @3000 miles

To the contrary, synthetic motor oils are superior for multiple reasons. They don't contain contaminants that conventional motor oils have that are inherent to their petrolium base. These contaminants include small amounts of sulfur, wax, and asphaltic material that can promote detonation as well as varnish and sludge buildup. Unlike conventional motor oil, synthetic motor oils base stock is artificially created or synthesized. Because of the higher purity of synthetic oil, the properties of synthetic motor oil can stand up to heat much better before breaking down than conventional motor oil. Synthetic motor oil can also withstand colder temperatures better than conventional motor oils. This a huge benefit when an engine is first started in cold weather. Furthermore, synthetic oil is much more resistant to viscosity breakdown thus allowing you to increase the mileage and time between change intervals.

thumbs up for the info,
you change the oil before its visosity breaks down

everyone each holds their own opinion and to each their own.
as for me, i dont go for whole " i can go 12,000 miles + on my new synthetic oil change"

No problem, but just to be clear though it isn't an opinion, its documented and proven science. The length of your mileage interval increase will depend on the engine, the climate its driven in and the driving conditions you subject it to. The only way I'd go 12,000 miles on any oil change would be if I was doing a solid road trip from the Florida Keys to the northern tip of Alaska and back in one giant road trip, ie 100% highway in a short time period.

lol this reminds me of a story at my dealership.

he comes in with his 2004 Chrysler PT cruiser turbo.
He is a sales rep for Amsoil. (supposidly) *i dont believe it
He gives us 4 quarts of 5w-30 Amsoil (the motor requires 4.75-4.8 quarts)
He also runs 25,000 miles on 1 oil change!

and also. i said 12,000 miles because you said synthetic lasts 2 times longer than conventional. the new eagle hemi's recommend oil changes at 6,000 miles so double would be 12,000 miles.

The 3000 miles for each change is actually a myth started with the oil companies way back when (and no Im not against the oil companies and actually work for one myself (research it anywhere)). I use mobile one synthetic and change about every 7500 miles with normal driving conditions with flooring it every now and then when I get a wild hair up my @%$. I know some people will got 10K with synthetic but 7500 has worked for me thus far. Every 3000 miles is just throwing your money out the window in my opinion. Have done this on my last 4 cars and have always gotten over 110K with no engine issues what so ever.
