Default CTD Mileage

My new truck is a 2010 Ram 3500 Laramie Mega cab CTD 4x4 with 3.73 rear end. Anyone else with the same truck and what are you getting for fuel mileage? I know mine is tight with only 500 miles on it and my old Cummins (1998 1/2 24 Valve) didnt break in good until about 15000 miles, but am hoping it improves. I am getting 13.4 right now, with a combination of highway and in town driving. My old Dodge got a pretty consistent 20 empty without towing or hauling the truck camper. Just curious.

have fun. My neighbor bought the equivalent to my trucks big brother with the cummins and he has the same gears as you and he is getting about 12 around here. He took it on a road trip and got about 16.5 but that was about it. And just in case you didn't know, they say not to let these newer diesels sit and idle for too long because it will just plug the particulate filters faster and cause them to regen more frequently. But they do run pretty good.

I know some 6.7's with 30k+ that are getting 15-16 highway, so they are still tight at that mileage. The good ole days of good mpg's on a diesel are gone, that's why an 06 cummins with a 150k miles still brings 20-25 in Texas. I hope she gets better for you, and +1 on the decreased idle times.

my buddy is a diehard cummins boy, he told me that there is a set up you can buy for these new cummins and bypass the particulate filter and regen process have you seen or heard of it?

That will void your 100k mile powertrain warranty for sure...not really worth it to get 4-5 more mpgs.

We just got one of the new 2011 superduty trucks with fords new 6.7 diesel and it is lightyears better than the 6.4 we got rid of. It will get 20mpg highway with no problem and it actually gets about 13mpg pulling our 1500 gallon water tanker around chasing the sprayer around. So the gas mileage can be better for the cummins but they need to work at it.

Are there any easy mods that I can do to help increase mileage? I dont need any increase in power per se, just would like a little better mileage as it breaks in. I sold my 1998 Ram 2500 with a CTD in order to get this one. It only had 43,000 original miles and would get a consistent 20 empty and 15-16 hauling the camper and pulling 3 ATV's. Dont want to do anything to void the warranty....any ideas?

UNPLUG THE EGR!

You will gain 1-2 mpg and you will increase the life of the engine. I also suggest that you go to cumminsforum.com for tons of info. Not much ctd stuff here.

Very true. Unplugging the egr is about the only thing you can do to get better mileage without voiding your warranty.
