Default 4 wheel drive episode

Yesterday I was in Minneapolis, MN as they were getting 9" of heavy wet snow. I'm using 4 wheel drive when I pull up to my brother-in-laws house and attempt to put the truck in park. It was difficult but when I got it in Park it actually went into reverse and made some grinding noise. Got it stopped and turned off the engine. when I tried to restart it nothing happened. So I took the lockout tab loose and pressed the button and everything worked fine. I the took it out of 4 wheel drive. Today I drove back to Des Moines and everything still appears to be fine. What happened and should I take it in to Dodge?

Read the thread " Warning when driving in slushy snow! ". The OP had the same thing happen. Most likely your transmission and transfer case was packed with snow.

Where is the lockout tab and what button did you press? Need to know before it happens to me in mountains with no cell phone coverage. Tx.

I think he's talking about the neutral button next to the 4x4 system. I could be wrong, but it is the only thing that is coming to mind concerning a "lock out tab".

He could mean this:

Page 314 (2009 Owners Manual) Center Console Shifter

(could not paste the photo-sorry)

There is an override for the BTSI that allows you to move
the shift lever out of the PARK position if an electrical
system malfunction occurs (i.e., dead battery). To access
the override (using a flat-bladed screwdriver), carefully
remove the override cover which is located on the right
of the shift lever gate.

1. Turn the key to the ACC or ON position without
starting the engine.
2. Firmly set the parking brake.
3. Press and maintain firm pressure on the brake pedal.
4. Using the screwdriver, press and hold the override tab
through the access port on the center console.
5. Move the shift lever into the NEUTRAL position.
6. The vehicle may then be started in NEUTRAL.
7. Reinstall the override cover.

I wondered what that little cover was for. Thanks for the info!
