Trading in for a gas sipper?
i dont see what the point in gettin rid of my truck for some ol 4 or 6 cylinder car that in the long run can cost more to repair. Im a volunteer fireman so i need my truck to haul my gear and to be able to get off road but yet on the other hand im also into muddin so keepin the truck sounds best for me and for what i do but as far as for the gas prices goin down or up well we will just have to wait and see.
I'm a truck owner for life, no matter the price of fuel(have own 4 previous). I have driven Mercedes(mom), Pacifica, rental cars, and I still would own a truck. But to the original thread of this topic. This forum does have a place to list your truck, its in the Dodge marketplace.
I use 4 gallons a day. An increase of 40 cents per gal. Is 1.60 a day. Not that big a deal. I also wonder, if you didnt need a truck, why get one? If I had to cross a 30 foot stream id get a canoe. Not a 20 foot cigarette boat with twin v8s. Extreme analogy but if you don't tow a boat/camper/trailer or load it with work stuff . If everything you do in that truck could be done in a prius, I don't get the point. I'm not judging like a hippy. I just don't get it.
As for my personal tastes, I prefer to be in a truck. I feel safer knowing that there is a hell of a lot more metal between me and Ms. EatingaBigMac And YappingonheriPhone.
Of course, you must understand that when I was 17 or 18, I was riding with a friend of mine in his 93 Honda Prelude. A car so small that I had to literally duck down, stick my head through the sun roof and stand back up so I could sit down in the damn thing. We were rolling down the highway when he swerved for something or another and ended up rolling the damn car at 70MPH. After seeing the car when we crawled out and knowing what my truck would have looked like, I made up my mind.
Another aspect is that I enjoy the comfort that can be had in a truck over a car. Don't get me wrong at all, but I enjoy having space to throw luggage, my computers, and haul five people at the same time. It can be done in a car, but it's really not comfortable for anyone involved.
When I finally got the money to buy a new vehicle, I bounced constantly between a new Ram and a new R/T Charger. Forgetting the wreck in the Honda, I thought a Charger would be much better on my pocketbook than a truck would be. Just for the simple fact that I drive 40 miles a day for school and now I'm adding in another 44 miles for work. That's 84 miles a day for those of you who failed HS math.
Even now when I fill up and it costs me just under $80.00 I think about how I could be getting 25MPG out on the highway. And, it would be nice. Especially knowing that I don't use my truck as a truck. I bought mine in October of 2010, and up until last week, I had never even so much as hauled anything significant; let alone tow anything.
What keeps me with my truck right now is knowing that where I live is riddled with unpredictable weather. Just like today. It's 27* here and blowing snow. Just two days ago, it was 67* and sunny. By Thursday, we'll be up to 75 and sunny again. The weather is the main thing that keeps me from getting a car. I need to know that if we get hit with a foot of snow that I will not be stuck wherever I happen to be at the time. Can't do that in a car at all. Not around here.
In the grand scheme of things, the main plan for me is to get a little cash saved up and make purchase of a car that I can use on pretty days. Not to mention the fact that it would be awesome to see a Ram and a Charger sitting together in my drive knowing that they are both mind.
At the very least, do what makes you happy. I know I will be for a long time knowing the capabilities of these trucks.
I have a K7 GSXR 1000 but only ride it on the weekends. To dangerous in FL. I have been considering dropping the Ram for 2011 5.0 Mustang GT. My buddies gets 20ish in the city and almost 30mpg on the highway.
I'm lucky (call it many years of hard work and saving lots), I have my Ram and and an 08 Stang GT as driving options each day. Wife has her own car.
