2010 Rear Differential Whine = WTF...????
And it's not just the way they handle the warranties, it's how they lie about not ever seeing any of these rearend failures come in for repair when you mention it. If you think about it, we bail Chrysler out, and then sales pick up so the beer drinking pot smoking on the job union (they were caught at two different plants a few months appart) gets their commisions and raises and the 2012 vehicles skyrocket to cover it. Then Chrysler intentionally missleads everyone in commercials with this new six speed transmission knowing damn well it's still the same old 5 speed hp sucking gear ratio that was in the previous trucks. The only real new six speed is the 66RFE. If you ask a salesman about the trans he'll tell you he knows nothing about it...they're played stupid by Chrysler. I had to school the trans tech at my dealership, he honestly knew nothing about it. When I went to Ford about the new stang, they told me and showed me the car specs in detail and even offered the how to supercharger upgrade. He sat in the car and showed me the functions and new tech. You ask a Chrylser sales rep anything and they can't even show you how to use the radio. So that brings us to the next issue...just who is working on these repairs? And as for mechanical warranties, the are rebuilding instead of replacing. If my engine were to throw a rod, they had better replace the motor, not just the rod. But according to them, they said they will just repair it if it ever happens. My mods are going in soon anyway and my warranty will be voided. But it's the thought of watching everyone go through all of this that urkes me. Chrysler is dishonest, they are missleading people, and they are not living up to their part of the bargain that was quoted to us at purchace, just like they did back in the 70's and 80's. I'll buy a used one, but it'll be a long time if ever before I purchase another new one. I'm hoping sales will drop so they'll be forced to clean up their act...till then, f...em!
My dealership tells me... "wow, yours is the first one we`ve seen with a differential problem" So after they said that, i asked them why they had FOUR 4th gen trucks sitting in their dealership with the rear diffs torn apart...!!! The looks on "their" faces were priceless...! They must think ALL people are stupid. Like you, this is definatly the last new dodge product i will buy until they can prove to me they`ve stepped it up on quality & reliability. (that`ll never happen, thats why they`re in last place in sales) I`ll most likely drive this truck thru the winter and trade it off for something different in the spring. (if it`ll make it that long without breaking down again and again and again)

Just got my truck back from the dealer and they did nothing. They told me yes we can hear the noise, and they called it "Gear whine". They told me they don't have any 2500 hemi's on the lot to compare the noise to see if it is normal. So they documented it just in case I have an issue with it. I think I will take it to another dealer, and see what they say.
I also don't want my rear end locking up at 70 mph pulling my fifth wheel with my family in the truck.
Anyone have a 2009 2500 with this noise?

In 1st gear the big rear ends can be heard if you listen. I've had two Danas and one AAM. You can gear them. The AAM axels used in the 2500 and 3500 are very trouble free on the diesel forumns. Bet there is nothing wrong with yours.
But this guy may just have the first real bad one...made on friday maybe...???
Just took my 2010 1500 CC in today for them to look at the rear end. They just called and told me they are replacing the pinion bearings. Well, I hope that gets rid of the "whine" I was hearing. It wasn't terrible, but it was there. Oh, I only have 13,500 miles on it.
Mine is quiet as can be and yes it has M1 in it. As does my SRT and my former 05 with 3.92s and it still has no issues, owner is on this forum.
One thing that the small percentage fails to think about... People NEVER log into a forum and creates a post that says "My radio played music today", or "My wipers removed water today", or my "Differential was quiet today". This is why it is easy to find "issues" and think its common to ALL trucks. Fact is it is probably common, but not at the level you may think. I know it is hard as it is your truck, very understandable.
You will not get anywhere posting here asking Chrysler to fix it. If you really want to make a difference start with letters and calls, then bring a lawyer into the mix. Bitching here will only create debates between members, which is really not what you want, you just want your truck right.
These are the same differentials that was used in the 3rd GEN as well.

"Used in the 3rd gen" may be true, but it dosent explain why we`re seeing so many 4th gen diff`s going bad.
I dont care about ford chevy toyota, i care and wonder why dodge diff`s seem to have had bad quality issues for a long time.
Most of us HOPE, that chrysler checks out some of these forums so they can see that ther might be a real big problem. It was never intended for chryler to fix them on here nore get results from them on here, just puttin words out there where we can only hope that they read them and see more complaints than they are really aware of, not just feedback from dealerships. Dealerships are NOT a good source of feedback bro, trust me, i`ve spent MANY MANY years in dealerships, i know how it works. Firther more, if a person wants to bitch about their truck on here, whats the big deal in doing so. ANY member should be able to voice their issues no matter what the topic is about their truck. Personally, i happen to like to read all the issues people have with their trucks on here, it kinda give ME a heads-up on maybe looking for something else on mine that i wasnt aware of. To each their own i guess. Please dont be affended, i`m NOT tryin to start any sh*t with you, some of us just happen to like reading about others problems, it DOES help ALOT of people. And YES, we ALL want out trucks to be perfect, dodge has had a bad rap for way to long as it is. Maybe if dodge would step up and admit to their quality issues, maybe they would become number one some day..! But i dought that will ever happen. Anyhowwwwww.....CHEER`S

I hope they do a complete proper set-up on yours, GOOD LUCK with that...!
Ask them what the drag in inch pounds are, just on the pinion when they put the new pinion bearings in.
I`ll tell ya right now, its "spec" is around 4 to 6 inch pounds for proper drag with nothing else in the case.
If they cant answer a question THAT simple, i wouldnt let them touch it..!
Got the truck back yesterday. They basically rebuilt the entire rear end, and replaced: Ring and Pinion Gears, Seals, Differential Side bearings, pinion bearings, crush sleeve,...
I only got to deal with the Service Rep., who doesn't seem to know a whole bunch about the technical stuff, and doesn't work in the garage, so I couldn't really ask him details about the work. ( I haven't been able to speak to a real mechanic there yet.)
All that didn't cost me a penny, which was great, and they only had the truck one day. So far so good.
It's nice and quiet now, and they told me not to tow for 500 miles. I'm going to replace the diff cover with the Mag Hytec at 500 miles, which will also give me clean diff lube, and LOTS of it. ( I've already ordered the Hytec cover. )
What's the best way to break in the new rear end so I don't have to go thru this again?
