I also have a 2010 1500 CC SLT with the Hemi. Mine has 11,000 miles on it, and I'm on my way to the dealer for them to open up the diff to take a look. I have a whine from around 55mph on up. It's worst around 60 mph, which is where I like to be when towing our tiny 3500 lb (gross) 17' camper. Got the truck to tow the thing, now I'm not so sure...

You won't have any problems towing 3500#s, it sucks that the rear ends are going out but once they get it right, towing won't be a problem.

Same scenerio here, 55mph starts whining, faster you go, louder it gets.
They told me when it blows, t-h-e-n-n-n-n call them, then they`ll replace the complete rearend. Thats pizz poor service if you ask me... why would i want to wait for it to blowout while i`m driving it down the road, not to mention, being inconvienienced by waiting for someone to come get me when it goes and i`m stuck on the road somewhere. Its getting worse day by day, so it wont be long from now when it blows. I thought i had a decent dealership to take care of me, but now i`m starting to think differently about them. I`m STILL waiting to hear back from them after waiting over 6 to 7 months (and several visits and phone calls) on what they`re going to do with the water leaking into the cab at the 3rd brk/light and ruining the headliner. If they cant even take care of something as simple as that, i cant imagine what`ll happen when the rear diff blows out. And noooo, i dont tow or haul anything at all. (Hemi 4x4 QC 3.55 open diff) Sure glad i`m not the only one having problems, cause for awhile, i thought it was just ME, being to picky about my truck.

The rear may never tear up. They can stay whining for years and thousands of miles. The guy at the dealer that tells you that wouldn't drive it around if it was his doing that. They may also not have a tech that can fix differentials. Find another dealer.

This diff is definatly getting ready to gernade...trust me, i know...!!!
When On/Off gas pedal, that says pinion bearings are shot now.

Yup, i agree, about no tech`s that can fix it, because all they can do today is plug a diagnostic box in, then keep bolting new parts on until they fix the problem. A TRUE mechanic is a dieing art today. Back in the day when i was a wrench, we pulled parts, rebuilt them, reinstalled them. That dosent happen anymore, so then they`ve now lost touch with what a REAL mechanic is.

Oh there's plenty of techs out there that do differentials. You just haven't been to the right shop. Back in the mid to late 1990s Dodge dealer I worked at we were doing 1 to 3 a day or more for a quite a while. Out of 20 or so techs 15 did diffs. We saw LOTS of diff issues out of Dana's. Thats why Chrysler ditched Dana.

Back in the 90`s, alot of GOOD wrench`s left the business for good. I was one of them.
I use to set up dana rearends to, in my dealership days. Just my personal opinion here, these ZF diff`s are junk from the get go compared to a good ole dana 60... but like i said, thats just my opinion. Once a diff is set-up PROPERLY, you likely never have to do it again in its lifetime. These differentials are sooooo mass produced today, its know wonder they are junk. They have to keep up with demand, rather than quality. Todays way of thinking is, bang`m out, worry about it later if it comes back. Thats just wrong...!!!!

All we have today, is BOLT-ON tech`s...!
I disagree with you on tech`s being able to set up a rearend today, they dont know how, in these dealerships... and ther isnt a (so called) tech within 100 miles of me that does it. (i know, i called around to all the dodge dealers) They all said when it blows, have it towed in and they`ll order a brand new complete rearend for me. The reason they tell you this, is because its less time consumming to REMOVE & REPLACE the rearend than it is to rebuild it.

So rather than have them do that, i`ll just spend the money and rebuild it myself. I trust MY work, i dont trust theirs. They`ll just rip it down with air guns, and blow it back together with air guns and never torque one single bolt while putting it back together. This truck is not a $100 dollar beater, it deserves to be put together professionally correct, the right way.

I`m not venting on you hounddog, i am just very particular about my sh*t.

I've worked with a lot of techs that did diffs. Lots. Some could/did/were setting them by feel they had done so many. Some grey paint on the gear pattern and they could spend, feel and look to set up one. The Dana's got to be a real bad headache. Thats why Chrysler dropped them and went with American Axle Manufacturing and ZF. Back last winter I was in a Walmart at 3am(don't ask) Lady behind me was wearing a shirt with ZF on it. The ZF manufacturing plant was not far away. She mentioned that ZF was running three shifts and building 9000 axle/differential assembly's a month. She said she didn't know for who but for sure knew that some or all were for Dodge/Chrysler. I was floored that ZF was running three shifts and pumping out 9000 units monthly. They are also who is building some of the automatics. The eight speed auto is a ZF unit.

Same here buddie, i use to build lots of rearends just by looks and feel. Never once did i ever have one come back with a complaint either. I always had the customer come back in 1,000 miles, changed the lube and sent them on their way. As a matter of fact, back in the day when motorhomes were using dodge chassis`s, i built quite a few 727 transmissions as well. Most the reason the tranny`s went, was, it was being asked to move a big house on wheels. No transmission will last long doing that, thats for sure. The 727 was a great transmission, IF you beefed it up to haul a motorhome chassis. I had some special mod`s i use to do, and also added 2 big tranny coolers to keep it cool.

Yeah i knew ZF was doing the 8-speeds. I wont be buying a dodge when they start showing up with ZF transmissions. As for the 9,000 ZF`s diff`s a month, right ther will tell you about demand vs quality. Thats exactly why they`re junk. They`re just blowin them out the door as fast as they can.

As i read on the forums more, i`m finding ALOT of unhappy people with the 4th gen trucks. Dodge better step it up or loose alot of customers. I will be one of them customers thats going to buy something different next time around when i trade this one in. I`m not brand loyal anymore. What ever impress`s me, thats what i`ll be buying. My bet it wont be another dodge truck. As much as i like the HEMI, that alone wont sell me a truck anymore. Yes, they all have their problems, BUT, what counts is service after the sale, and i do have to say, i am NOT impressed with dodge`s service right now at all. I`m STILL waiting to hear back from them what they are going to do about my ruined headliner. Its going on 7 months and nothing has been done about it. Now i`ve got this heater reflash and tie-rods to be done... makes me wonder if either of those will ever get done.
