Just bought a 2010 Ram. 21k miles transfer case being replaced. I am worried. Any other failures I should expect?

Not sure. I noticed a hum that would get louder only during acceleration above speeds of 30mph. I took it in for the noise, they called me and said they would have to replace the Transfer case. They have had it since last Thursday and it is now Tuesday. My truck has been in the shop almost as long as I have owned it.

No one can tell you " other failures I should expect". Trucks are mechanical and break. One poster says he has over 100,000 miles with no issues. Seems exhaust bolts, rear end (non lsd), torque converter are the most common complaints.

Believe me, I understand there will be issues on any piece of machinary. Maybe I should have asked my question differently. Would a bad transfer case cause any damage to another companant that might not be visable at this point?

I don't think it is a common failure. I haven't read about any failing that I can recall off hand.
I don't think it will have caused any damage to anything else since it didn't lock up or anything.

Rhodes,

This is Chris from Top Care at Chrysler. Did you get your truck back and did they resolve the issue for you? How is it running? I have not heard of the transfer case failure as being a common problem but would be interested to know if the shop mentioned the reason for failure. Send me a PM of your dealer experience if you did indeed get the work done at a Dodge dealer. Thanks...

Transfer cases are relatively simple. Used vehicle and a somewhat isolated instance. Thats what a warranty is for.
