1500 Outter Tierod Recall
Gutty,
Dodge will not put in the same bad part as they take out. They replace the defective part with a part that no longer has the flaw that caused the recall in the first place. The problem with waiting until the recalled part fails is that it is a safety issue, otherwise they would have not recalled the part.
My suggestion to anyone who receives a recall notice of any kind is to contact your dealer and get it taken care of as soon as reasonably possible to prevent any failure that may occur. Sometimes with a recall on a popular model, a delay in getting the part to the dealers happens for any number of reasons including the sudden flood of part orders in anticipation of customers coming in even before customers make appointments.
I apologize for the inconvenience this puts everyone through but hope that if you get a recall notice you contact the dealer to have the work done and not wait until the part fails before doing so.

I am booked to have the recall done next Friday. So all will be well after that.
I picked up my truck yesterday from having the recall work done. After a short ride home something didn't seem right. This morning I drove to work and noticed the handling is very different that it was before the work. I'm thinking maybe the alignment is off but Im trying to give them the benefit of the doubt that they did it correctly.
At low speeds the steering wheel has a tendency to follow lumps in the road and when I hit a decent size bump it has horrible bump steer almost to the point of pulling the wheel out of my hands. On the highway there seems to be a dead spot at center, maybe 20-30 deg of wheel turn in each direction and it wonders all over. Once you get past the 20-30 deg of play the steering seems stiff.
I think these are signs of not enough toe-in or even some toe-out, but I don't think that would give a dead feeling at center would it? Just a tendency to react more quickly to inputs?
I asked the dealer if the specs changed with the new tierods and they said no. I'm scheduled again for the 6th to have them check it out and send it back to the alignment shop. I'm hoping its just an alignment issue and not a change in geometry from the new tierods.
Has anyone else had the recall done yet?

If it's screwed up that bad I wouldn't let them put you off until the 6th. Make them look at it right away. It could be a safety issue if they have something put together wrong or something is loose.

I had my outer tie-rods replaced friday.Along with a torn axle boot, and broken valve stem sleeve.Glad to get it fixed. At the same time,I hate having my truck someplace other than home, but hey,the repairs made were on them!I did not ask them if they done an alignment. If they didn't,I suspect they would have told me to have it done.....
I might just go for an alignment at my local alignment shop see if they find any issues, have them specifically pay special attention to ball joints and tierod ends. If anything is bad, I think I will just pay to have it fixed and I will have a lifetime warranty and grease fittings, as someone else said. Not even have the dealer install it because well, everytime I get the wheels taken off for some reason i always need a second trip for an alignment or balance or something.
I have a very early build 10/08 so maybe I don't need it, which makes me happy the dealer won't be monkeying around with my front end. Knock on wood but I haven't had really any of the problems the 10's and 11's seem to be having, mine was built before the collapse so maybe that means something?

Yep on the list going in Friday, one of the doors on my heater and A/C is making a noise like a midget is stuck in there so it had to go in anyway what sucks is I had a recall for that already and it was fixed better not be a constant issue. The had tierod ends in stock, what are they putting on the same junk that is there? I so much want to put so reliable ones with lifetime warranty..but I guess I will wait until my warranty is up, I only have 18000 kms on mine and it's driving perfectly straight no vibrations , pulls etc. if I get it back with any different issues they will do an alignment at their cost because I have a local shop I use.
