Default broken windshield=(

Was about 2 degrees outside, and started truck up and let it warm up. Came out 5-10min later to put stuff in truck and when i shut the door i heard a loud pop. Looked around and noticed the wind shield split all the way across. there where no cracks or chips in it either.. Any ideas what could have happen? It had been creaking for about a week before...

only thing I can even think of is the same principal as pouring coffee in a glass (or iced glass). going from one extreme to the other, and then the door.

Could be a chip or a crack in it that you can't see from inside the truck? Look from the outside all around the edges

If you heat the inside of your windshield by using the heater or especially defroster, the inside of the windshield expands whilst the outside does not. The heated area expands, whereas the cold area does not. This creates a great deal of tension in the glass. Any shock, such as closing your door, can allow the glass to release the tension by breaking.

Basically remember to run your heat on low so that the all glass heats slowly and thoroughly as opposed to partially.

I`ve run my defrost full bore and NEVER cracked a windsheild in my 40+yrs of driving.
And also, if that were the case, dam near every windsheild in colder climates would have broke.
I would blame it on how it got installed at the factory. Only other thing would be pouring hot water on it.

Sounds like the windshield was slightly tweaked and the combination of that, the hot/cold made it very weak. Maybe your frame on your truck is tweaked or maybe you were parked on an uneven surface and it finally gave.<--most likely
Glass is very strong, but it's also very brittle. It's a hard concept to think about, but we all know it's true. Stainless steel is another very strong material yet brittle(cracks easier than mild steel).

Well, the GOOD NEWS. Windshield replacements are like $150. It almost makes it worthless to pay for glass coverage with insurance companies if you don't already have full coverage. The only thing I don't like with the insurance companies is they give you aftermarket glass as compared to factory glass with the checkered sun visor up top that has the Ram head in it. I'd be pissed to lose that and would probably pay for OEM glass out of pocket so I can keep that.

Mustve been a wake up call early in the morning. If the dealer doesnt fix it then it isnt anything too expensive. Mustve been slighty chipped somewhere, seen it happen on an older Cougar i used yo have. Cracked all the way across when i would like to say the door was accidentaly slamed.

How nice for you. I personally have cracked at least two windshields this way. And after doing it have talked to friends who have reported similar phenomenon.

This is not something that will happen every time. If the glass gets fully heated before it receives a shock it will not break. If the temperature is wrong it will not break etc etc etc.... it is like a 1 in a hundred chance, but it still happens.

To paraphrase what you are saying... if having sex lead to babies all women who had ever had sex would be pregnant. Nope, it is like a 1 in a hundred thing, but it happens all the time.
