Long story short we have an 09 with the Dual headlights (single bulb for low/hi) and I switched them to Slyvania's and they still suck.

So I'm looking to throw in some 55W bulbs. Now...I've read all over about flickering and the TPMS acting up.

So, does anyone know of an HID setup that's 55w, has the Hi/Lo function, and doesn't cause errors/glitches?

We drive the truck to the mountains so we are constantly driving late at night on the open highway (so the only light is the lights on the truck) so the setup has to be as reliable as possible.

I've tried searching but it was pretty inconclusive. Either dead links or pictures that no longer worked.

Yep the headlight or should I say refelctors really suck on these. I am going to be getting these. They seem to be the best out there from what I have researched.

they seem to be the source of choice on the forum ... both because they make the ram specific harness and because their quality has been reportedly good.

i probably would have bought a set (i also have crappy "dual" headlights and prefer driving our mini-van in the dark ... ugh) except that some also claim that without projectors lights will not be as good and they will also be blinding other drivers.

Also like. Iskybantilus stated... Do it correctly please to eliminate blinding drivers there was a fellow ram behind me today with duals n hids, i have 5% limo tint so it wasn't bad... Then i opened my rear slider window and it was bad. Save up or spemd the $$ and retro fit them.

Also, what most guys don't know and realize, is that while the ballasts may be 55w output, the bulbs they use are the 35w bulbs being overdriven. So, what this means is that bulb life gets diminished even faster. For starters, most(99.9%) of aftermarket HID bulbs last anywhere's between 400-800hours. Overdriving 35w bulbs with 55w ballasts reduces their lifespan by more than 30%. There is an exact formula for the reduced lifespan when overdiving, but I dont feel like getting into it... Even Genuine HID style bulbs are 35w and get overdirven with 55w ballasts.

ALL HID conversion kits are CHINA made! Since Genuine HID(non-conversion) style bulbs cost $100/pr alone and are made by Philips and OSram, they are heavily tested and proven to last 2500hours with a reduced ouput of ~20% at 2500hours, there's no way a China bulb will last that long with cheaper(fewer) salts and rebuilt bases which most are. Bulbs are very expensive to make.
I suppose failure rate of the ballasts is most important. This can be different from one seller to the next. All Digital parts are Not created equal.

I've done a TON of research before I went the custom retro-fit route for my truck. Spend hundreds of hours reading up on HIDs to fully inform myself. I gathered up so much info that I was actually able write a paper on HID's for my English Composition class a few years back and got an A+, for which I graduated with an Electronics Engineering degree. It was so involved my Professor had sent it out so that a Chemical Professor could read and grade it as well.

HID's in Halogens are blinding to cars that sit low and are technically illegal as they scatter the light. I can always tell when vehicles have them driving by. Most seem bright, but not super blinding so it depends which vehicle they are in and how the headlights are aimed.
HID's installed into aftermarket projectors have terrible output because the longer HID bulb is not made for the halogen projector housing. The output from them is based on bulb length and they use cheap internal reflectors and lenses!

My stock '08 lights with stock bulbs were actually very bright drivingdown the road. I hear of everyone saying how they suck, but I gotta be honest, for stock halogens they were pretty good. Compared to what i have now, they suck...lol

 

The 08 headlights are different from the 09 headlights. The 09 headlights are HORRIBLE. Least light output of any car we have ever owned...

Our 02 Ram put out way more light.

 

Dunno, I've got the regular 2 ways in my 09 and they don't seem any different than any of the other trucks I've had. Only issue I've noticed is how easily the lens gets dirty since it is so flat it collects and bakes on the dirt during slush season.

 

To the OP.... as for projectors I am currently running Morimoto MH1's if I remember correctly. I spoke w/ JJ over at www.Retroshop.us and he hooked me up w/ what I wanted and what he recommended. He is great, shoot him an e-mail and he'll do up a quote if your interested. He does custom work and his work was flawless.

I made some inquiries about a projector retrofit and it was just too much at $400 for the most basic setup - and $500+ for what I wanted.

So I opted for a simple plug and play kit into the reflectors. I bought the retrosolutions Ram specific kit and found a discount code online which brought the kit to just over $170 shipped. I'm hoping it ships tomorrow and gets delivered Saturday so I can install it Saturday or Sunday. If not, I will probably install it on Monday.
