Default hemi knocking on startup

Guys,
I have a 2009 with the hemi and 49,000 miles on it.
Starting 2 weeks ago my engine makes noise when i start it.

It sounds like the lifters or valves tapping for about 30 seconds after a cold start. I changed the oil and the sound is still there upon startup.

I first noticed this after my truck sat at the airport for two weeks. The first time starting after two weeks seemed reasonable to have noise but now it does it every single time i start it. Any ideas?

I might bring it in soon but i'm waiting for our 2008 commander to come out of the shop. Dealership has had it for 5 weeks now. The cylinder heads warped and they are changing them under warranty.

Mine has always had valve noise on startup. It's more apparent when it's sat for some time. In my opinion it's harmless, and inherent with Dodge. It just takes the oil a little bit to fill the lifters and pick up the slack. As long as it goes silent soon after, all's good.

Are you using 5W-20 Dyno or Synthetic oil? Some guys out west in the hotter climate use 10 weight oils.

i'm using 5w20 full synthetic. I agree that is probably harmless but it's just odd that it only started doing this 2 weeks ago.

While i do agree with you, i'm nervous to bring it in. They've had my wife's commander for almost 5 weeks now for the cylinder head replacement under warranty. Now they told me today they need to keep it another 3 months due to back ordered parts!! I don't like the idea of them having both of my vehicles.

3 MONTHS!!! You are a patient person, stuff would be hitting the fan for sure if they told me that. They at least better be letting you have a top of the line loaner vehicle.

As for your truck, did you also replace the oil filter, I have read somewhere of issues with tapping on start up with certain oil filters, worth a try.

They have my wife in a rental car. It's a 2012 Grand Caravan. She's fine with that although it's disappointing that a cylinder head on her commander has to be replaced at 65,000 miles. good thing we have the extended warranty. It's all good as long as the warranty keeps paying for the rental. We're getting her a GMC Yukon next year.

I think my Ram has the exhaust leak issue, I've been reading about the manifold bolt TSB. I guess i'll schedule an appointment.

You might have a couple exhaust manifold bolts broken - Typical, and under warranty.
Once the exhaust manifold heats up, the leak close`s up...hence noise goes away.

Just food for thought:
What synthetic oil & oil filter are you using...? How many miles before you change the oil & filter...? I myself switched to valvoline syn-power 5w20 and i always use the factory MOPAR oil filter, since switching oil`s, i no longer have noise`s on cold starts, nore do i have anymore noise`s after my truck sits for a few days and then start it for the first time. I wont say what synthetic oil i use to use before i switched to valvoline because i dont want to start ANOTHER oil war in here on the forums again. If you use cheap oil filters, the anti-drian back valve in the filter might not be doing its job, or worse yet, not even have a anti-drain back valve in it. This allows the oil to return back down to the oil pan. Then it takes a few seconds to get oil back up thru to the topend of the motor, .......etc etc etc.
