Warning. Real technical type question about transmission
Not nuts and bolts technical but wondering if others experience these two things:
1) when shifting from D to R or R to D, if the truck is rolling at all do you feel a hard hit into gear? (my previous truck shifted very soft between d & r no matter what I did and thus developed a bad habit).
2) when I pull up to a light and come to a stop I feel a quiet "thunk" about 1 to 3 seconds after stopping. I suspected gasoline sloshing, but it feels more sharp and the time delay seems a bit long.
Every vehicle is different so I figure I would ask others. 12 ram 4x4 5.7

#2 is a commonly reported thing when your fuel tank is in the neighborhood of 3/4 full. Seems to be more prevalent on the 32 gallon tanks.
#1: I am usually stopped when I shift, but I think in the times I have been very slowly moving it is not a harsh engagement.

Get it up on a rack somewhere, like your tire guy or someone with a private shop and go through the motions to try and force it to happen while it's up in the air. Might be easier to hear or spot it like that. Oh, and check for oil around your pinion while ur at it. Hat to put the gregory on you but better to know now if it's leaking than later.
There a couple of ideals, Check the driveshaft bolts and pinion nut, and the flange at the pinion. You could also have to much back lash on the ring and pinion. High idle will also cause the transmission to shift harsh. I know the was a star case on the manual shift valve on the 545RFE transmission that was causing a clunk sound at times when shifting from park to either reverse or drive. The updated valve is from a 68RFE transmission. I have also seen the driveshaft also cause a clunk sound too. How is the transmission shifting?
I've noticed that hard shift when I back out of the driveway and move the lever to D. Personally I thought it might be related to the Hill Start Assist but I didn't test the theory by turning it off and seeing if it made a difference. I just make sure I'm totally stopped when I move the shift lever.

Transmission shifts fine through all gears. No noticeable slop in the drive train, and there shouldn't be with only 3k miles. Everything is clean and dry underneath. It is still like new.
Doing a very low speed reverse drop is probably not good. Bad habit from my old chevy that didn't care. That tranny was so soft it shifted like butter. I have to say tat old 4 speed was superior in almost every way. I got used to soft and less positive shifts.
I do have a 32 gallon tank. Maybe that low thud is the gasoline? I will have to make note at certain tank levels.

Yea, why not. Always good to be educated.
