Angry Intermittent 4WD Problems

Hello, need some help here. I have a 2010 Laramie and I reported an issue to my dealer back in early 2011 where I was having problems with the 4WD not disengaging and turning on the Service 4WD light. Once the truck was restarted, the code would clear and the 4WD would disengage. They said that they could not find a code and that it worked fine. Of course this only occurs when the temps are cold (below 20 degrees F). Well, it was acting up again this past weekend doing the exact same thing. It even turned on the Service 4WD light when I went to engage the 4WD. Of course, I just had it in for service last week and my warranty expired on 1/26/12; however, I am still under 36,000 miles. I have the MaxCare warranty but it carries a $100 deduct and my service advisor said that it might need to be fixed under that. I think this is ridiculous since I reported the problem early enough and it is very intermittent. Should I contact Chrysler and voice my displeasure?

I did find one guys article posted here who had the same problem and they changed his actuator module in the dash, which seemed to have fixed it.

Thanks in advance,

Ed

If it is a continuation of a problem reported while under warranty it is likely to still be covered. Or you can ask Chrysler for 'good will' coverage since you are so close to the warranty end date and still under mileage.

The SERVICE MANAGER can also make a determination. Need to meet with him before any0 more time goes by.

Ed,

There is a good chance that Chrysler would waive or reimburse you the deductible if the vehicle is this close to the warranty running out. In order for them to do that the vehicle has to be diagnosed first. From what you have written it doesn't seem that the dealership you are using has been able to do that. While the above poster is correct that the dealer could certainly cover the vehicle without Chrysler getting involved from what the service person said it doesn't sound like they are willing to do that.

The real question here is can the vehicle be diagnosed and fixed? Will the issue pop up again later if not? My suggestion would be to call Chrysler (800-992-1997) and let them know that you have experienced this before and are experiencing the problem again and inform them of what the dealership has indicated about the deductible so it is on record. Then if the problem can only be duplicated or diagnosed at some point in the future, Chrysler will have record of your concern happening before the warranty expired and now. That way it will be much easier to get your deductible waived.

Thanks for the follow-up Chris. I just dropped it off at Roseville and talked to the service manager today. He is going to get it taken care of; however, I could not get it to throw a code on my way there. I am hoping that the "SERVICE 4WD" code that it throws is logged in the computer so that they can troubleshoot it. The problem is intermittent and seems to surface only when really cold (below 15-20 degrees). It's still a pain when you have to shut the truck off just to clear the code and get the 4WD to disengage.

Will keep you posted.

It's going down into the teens tonight so hopefully they can get it to duplicate in the morning if nothing else.

Yeah, I saw that too and hopefully it's cold enough. Do you know if the code is logged when it displays on the dash?

It could but not always. Some clear after so many cycles of no code.
