5lug instead of 6lug
In the Chrysler line 6 lugs is the exception not the norm. I believe the Dakotas were the first to have the 6 lug rather than 5. There was a time when the bolt pattern was different on the trucks 4X4 was 5 on 5 inch but 4X2 was 5 on 4.5 inch like the cars. There even was a time in the 60's and maybe early 70's when the left side studs were left handed threads too as a safety precaution. We have had many changes in recent years.
In the pickup lines I know that Chevy, GMC, Toyota, the Dakotas all had 6 lugs at some point in time. I'm not sure what others did. The most confusing thing I ever saw is the light duty Ford 3/4 tons with 7 lugs. I was told they did that so they didn't have to put LT rated tires on them from the factory.
I'm pretty sure the F150's went to 6 lugs in 2004.
The 7 lug is on the F150 HD package to keep people from installing the lighter load wheels on the HD suspension trucks. I guess the reason for the 7 lugs is that the standard F150 wheels would be too light and if they went with 8 lugs, one could think that the truck was rated 3/4 ton so they opted for 7 on the HD version. Seems kinda dumb to have so many non interchangable parts.
The F250's have 8 lugs just like the Ram 2500's.

Because its cheaper. 4 less lugs per truck equal a huge savings. Plus 5 can be as safe as 6 depending on materials and stud size.

I never saw one of the F150s with the 7 lugs, the ones I have seen have definitely been F250s, two owned by friends that I discussed this oddity with. I believe 7 lugs on a F150 would be even weirder.
Those were the F250 - light duty that they made for a couple years. Basically an F150 with heavy half package. They had the same body as the F150, which is how you can pick them out.
They have made F150 HDs for years. Still make them today and they do have 7 lugs.
