Need Your "Expert" Tire/Wheel Opinion :)
Before I began, let me apologize, because once I get started, I tend to ramble on. I'm going to be listing all the ideas floating around my head, combined with all the internet/forum info. I've been reading the past few days... I just need to put this all in one place and get multiple opinions. And before I forget, let me thank you for posting your opinions, experience, etc., I hope I can help you sometime in the future.
Current Setup
Vehicle: 2009 Ram 1500 SLT 4x4 w/ ReadyLift 2.0" leveling kit.
Current Tires/wheels: 315/70R17 Goodyear Wrangler DuraTracs on 17x9 wheel with -12 offset.
Scenario:
DuraTracs need replacing... They have been great tires, have over 60K on them. Recently, however I've been doing more highway travel and less off the pavement travel. So, I still want a all terrain tire but don't need the aggressive all terrain tire like the DuraTracs, as I'm hoping to get some good life out of them, but at the same time still want something that if I need to get "out there", I wont be second guessing myself.
To that end, I have pretty much settled on the Hankook Dynapro ATM. I've read nothing but good things about these tires... seriously, it's damn hard to find a bad review on them... trust me, I looked.
I was also looking at the Faulken WildPeaks, but they had mixed reviews.
Ok, here's the kicker. I'm getting new wheels as well. Well, the 17s have been ok, but time to step it up to either 18s or 20s. Here are the scenarios I'm considering, with my thoughts (pros/cons)... PLEASE TELL ME WHAT TO DO, b/c as of now I'm about to just buy every damn tire and wheel listed below just to try them all out. {insert CRAZY emotocon}
Current Tire Dimensions (315/70R17 DuraTracs):
Diameter = 34.4"
Width = 12.7"
*Note: Tire sticks out about 2 inchs from the tire well.
SIZE OPTIONS TO BUY (all Hankook Dyanpro ATM):
LT325/65R18
Diameter = 34.6"
Width = 13.0"
Pros:
- Should have zero problems on a 18x9 wheel, as far as fitting/spacing goes.
- Cheapest scenario so far.
Cons:
- Only 18s... not much difference than 17s
- Being that they're 3/10 'ths wider, they are going to stick out that much further than my DuraTracs.
LT305/55R20
Diameter = 33.2"
Width = 12.4"
Pros:
- A 20 inch tire that should fit without any rubbing.
- 3/10 inch slimmer than DuraTracs... that much less that sticks out.
- Middle of the road price
Cons:
- Hate having a smaller overall diameter that what I currently have (1.2" smaller).
LT325/60R20
Diameter = 35.4"
Width = 13.0"
Pros:
- Best of both worlds, bigger tire, 20 inches, etc.
Cons:
- Even with 2" lift in front, at 1" larger and 3/10" wider, I just know these are going to rub on something.
- Most expensive scenario.
Wheel Sizes / Questions:
Here are the following sizes I have available for the wheel I'm looking at.
18x9 -12 offset
18x9 +1 offset
20x9 -12 offset
20x9 +1 offset
20x10 -12 offset
20x10 -24 offset
1) If I go with the 18" tire/wheel, could I get away with the +1 offset wheel, so they don't stick out as far? Like I said, the LT325/65R18 size is almost the same size tire I have know; only .2" larger and .3" wider, but with a less aggressive tread pattern (16/32 vs 18/32).
2) If I go with the 305/55R20 (which I'm probably considering the most), should I get a 20x9 or 20x10 wheel? Remember, this tire is over a inch smaller and .3" slimmer than what I'm currently running. And, if I should get the 20x9 wheel, would the +1 offset work? Which would look better anyway +1 or -12 offset in a 20 inch wheel (I would tend to think the +1, since the tire wouldn't be sticking out as much)?
3) Here's the question I've been reading lots of thread on... Will the 325/60R20 fit with my 2" leveling kit without rubbing? I'm pretty sure the answer is no... granted ReadyLift says on their website that 35" tires should fit with no problems, but that's most likely 35x12.50 tires, correct? These would be 35.4"x13.0". Ok, say they do fit, are we going with the 20x9 -12 offset wheel, or the 20x10 -24 offset wheel? God, just typing that I can see 20x10 -24 offset wheel.... probably stick out 6 inches; freaking monster truck style.
Ok, think that about covers it. I look forward to your comments (keep the crazy scattered brained ba$tard comments to a minimum please). Thanks for your help, look forward to helping you in the future if I can.
