Looking for shocks that work with heavier tires
I'd like to find shocks that are a little stiffer than stock ones to better handle the heavier tires I have on now. The Cooper Zeon LTZs are, I think, about 10 pounds heavier per tire and it is noticeable. Based on what I've seen, most all-terrain tires are heavier than the factory Goodyears. Those appear to be some very light tires. I suppose other road-specific tires are lighter too, but I don't plan on straying from all-terrain tires in the future.
Anyone know what I should look in terms of shock specifications to find a replacement that works on my truck but does a better job damping higher unsprung weight? Is there some specification number I should be comparing?
Thanks,
Rob

Rob, check out pro comp shocks, installed a few here, never had an issue with them. I believe they also have a lifetime warranty as well.

Thanks for the pointer. Looks like they have several model ranges. Which have you installed mostly? The ES9000? At $149 for a set of 4 they seem fairly inexpensive, so that's good.

I`ve installed several different shocks they offer, havent had an issue to date with them yet. As for their warranty too, cant tell you if its worth the ink its written on because i`ve never had to replace ANY under warranty...lol. Until i see issues with their shocks, i`ll always buy them for my customers. Personally, i believe THEY have the best bang for the buck..! I can tell you this budd, they are so far superior over the OEM shocks, you`ll kick yourself for not replacing the OEM`s alot sooner.
Thanks. Is shock replacement pretty easy? Something that can be done in my garage with floor jack, jack stands, normal mechanic tools? No spring compressor needed like with struts, right?

So I called 4 Wheel Online that was linked to above. Info I got from them was that the 1500 takes struts up front so Pro Comp doesn't make anything for the front. Not sure I believe him since you say you've used them before. Does Pro Comp have a strut part in the ES9000 series for the front?

i dont know why they told you that, maybe you spoke with a newbie there that didnt know their product line...?
The fronts are listed as shocks too, but you have to use the EXP-ZX2014 on the frontend.
It is year specific, so go there and click on the drop down menu to chose the year.
Go with the ES9000 on the rear. Dont buy the rubber covers, they trap moisture.
Once you`ve put these on your truck bro, you`ll lov`m.

Interesting. The guy was pushing me hard toward the Ranch 9000 package. At around $500 for the set maybe that's why he wasn't accurate about the Pro Comps.
So, two EXP-ZX2014 for the front ($109.99/ea) and two EXP-9000R for the rear ($37.95/ea) makes a good set for the 4th Gen RAM 1500? About $300... not bad.
Thanks,
Rob

What is the issue? harsh ride on the road, off-road? If it's mostly on the road ride, I'm not sure more dampening/rebound will make the ride feel different. You ask a very good question and one I've never been able to solve. In some cases I think I've made things worse. The stock shocks should be able to handle the heavier tires on the road. Unless you are doing Baja off-road kind of driving. Anyhow, I've put Eldebrocks on one truck and boy did they help off road, on road no improvement. Perhaps your stock shocks are just tired. Maybe try some that are adjustable so you can play with the settings. I've also had good luck with KYB shocks. I don't know if they even make them for your truck though. Go with a good brand and you'll be ok. I'm surprised no one with the bilsteins has chimed in.
not to go off subject but LU, if you don't buy anymore Rams, and leave the forum, who's going to keep the moderators busy on here....LOL
