Default Towing

Hello,

Quick question for you guys. I have a 2014 Ram 1500 (5.7 Hemi, 3.92 rear end) Has any one towed a 5th wheel with the 1500? We currently have 28ft Travel trailer and we're towing it with no issues, but we would like to get a 30ft 5th wheel. I've seen them on the road but never had the opportunity to ask the drivers.. I appreciate your feedback..

Thank you

Rick

Its all about the weight. My guess would be, a 30 foot fifth wheel is going to be pushing your limits pretty hard. Might have to look at upgrading the truck to match.

That's already gotta be pushing the limit on your tow rating. I think you would be much happier with a heavier duty truck..... I love my 3/4 ton. It will do whatever I need it to. Gas mileage kinda sucks though.

HeyYou is correct. You're already pushing the limits of your truck, and a larger trailer is beyond its capabilities. Be safe, for yourself and others on the road, by upgrading to a 1-ton diesel.

Capsfloyd, what kind of use does your truck see? What has broken (if anything) in getting to 300k miles?

If fifth wheels are anything like boats, they will start off at some weight but end up a lot heavier due to the weight of dishes, generators, food, whatever that these units collect.

And my biggest concern would be stopping one of these units towed by a truck with limited suspension and brake capabilities.

Based on RAM's chart, a 2014 Ram 1500 Hemi, 3.92 gears
Regular Cab, Quad or Crew, 2wd or 4wd, 6-speed or 8-speed are around 10,000lbs (lowest, Highest is 10,450)
Only difference is the Regular Cab, Short box is 9,000lbs
Payload is 1,400lbs (Lowest, Highest is 1730)

Like 706jim stated, account for all the stuff in the trailer, and people, gas, and stuff in the truck to stay underweight and safe.
Also make sure to properly adjust trailer brakes, and have them set correctly.

I have the OEM brake controller, and you can adjust the trailer brakes with it so they brake the right amount, not to hard or to little.
