Unhappy Loud Buzz or Whine coming from Dash on 2016 Ram 1500

I have a Loud High Pitched Whine or Buzz coming from 2016 Ram 1500 Dash - Its so loud it drowns out the radio and hurts your ears.

  • Issue occurs Randomly
    • Doesn't occur every time I drive truck
    • It could last for 1 sec or go continuously until truck is shut off
    • Has done it at least 8 times since I bought truck 2 weeks ago
      • Once it lasted about 2 min
        • This occurrence all I did was unlock the truck and open the door to get in.
        • Truck was not running and key was not in ignition
      • Twice now while driving I have had to pull truck over turn it off and open the door so the dash electronics turn off.
      • The remainder of the times it has only lasted for 1 – 5 sec
The sound itself seems to be originating from lower right side of center dash but its so loud it is hard to tell. Maybe it just sounds like it is coming from bottom as there is an opening in back to the storage area in the console.
I have it into the shop now but everyone I showed video to looked like deer caught in headlights.
I captured a video and posted on Youtube (
)

Any input would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Holy crap is that annoying! I would have taken a hatchet to my dash by now. Believe it or not, it could be the hard drive in the radio.

First I would try to narrow it down by crawling underneath the dash. Maybe remove some trim and accesories and drive like that. Next I think I would get familiar with fuses and relays. Next time it occurs pull over and start pulling them to isolate the issue a little .

UPDATE:

I got my Ram back from dealer today, they said they found a failing speaker in the dash. Speaker and speaker bracket were replaced.

Hoping the speaker was issue....

How could it be a speaker if:
Once it lasted about 2 min
  • This occurrence all I did was unlock the truck and open the door to get in.
  • Truck was not running and key was not in ignition
?????

I don't know what gets power when the doors are unlocked and opened... I do believe it is possible speaker as it was so loud it would give you a headache in minutes.

I'm crossing my fingers - will drive for a week and see what happens... it was random but pretty regular so time will tell...

I'll drop in an update in a week or 2

Since that is at between 495 and 516 Hz, a speaker issue makes sense. That frequency is too odd to be something like a relay or solenoid that is DC powered. It wouldn't surprise me if that dash speaker is used for things like the headlight chime, door ajar chime, and navigation announcements, so the speaker having power even with the key off doesn't seem improbable either.

I hope for your sake the dealer was correct and the speaker and bracket fixes the issue.
