Default 2500 5.7 or 6.4 sell me

Hey guys. I’m in the market for a new-to-me truck. My target truck is a 2014 and newer ram 2500 gas (and only gas) 4x4 crew cab. I only tow heavy a few times a year. 10k or less. (My tractor with loader). Otherwise it’s my daily driver. I’m torn between the options available. I can find trucks with a 5.7 and 3.73 gear as well as the 6.4 with 3.73 in my price range. The 5.7 trucks seem to be around 5-7k less than the 6.4. I have my heart set on a 6.4 just because of the extra hp/tq and tow numbers. And I just need some help here in data/suggestions. What do you all think?

We have a 2016 2500 with the 6.4 for a work truck. (fully loaded though.... very nice) I love it. Drives nice, rides decent, and plenty of power. If you really want the 6.4, GO FOR IT!

I appreciate it. I think I will just hold out and find one I like with the 6.4. I just don’t want to be disappointed later on and wish I had spent the little extra and gotten exactly what I wanted. I have only read good things about the 6.4 engines so far. Hope all is true.

My only issue with the truck is the MDS. At low speeds, (like, around town, up to about 45 mph) it is noticeable when the MDS kicks in. I can feel it. The engine isn't as smooth. At higher speeds, you have to be paying attention to notice it. Aside from that, no problems with it at all.

HeyYou, glad you posted on this thread. I enjoy your posts on the 2nd gen forum.

You drive a 6.4L 4wd work truck? What gears are in the rear? You tow heavy 12-17k lbs with the truck? Curious on fuel mileage? I'm at the point that I need to buy a new truck (well a newer used truck). I'm coming from a 2010 dodge 3500 diesel 3.73 gears, 4wd. I wasn't really impressed with the 2018 2500 dodge diesel and my 2010 would out perform it in every category. Thanks again buddy, Cheers

Why are you replacing the current truck?

I work at a computer shop, so, I personally don't haul anything heavy with the work truck. (I do with my 98 though......) I think I may have put 50 miles on the work truck so far, and it is head and shoulders more comfy than mine. Will it tow as much? Probably. The work truck is just so much more refined than mine. I think we average around 13mpg on the work truck, but, there just isn't a lot of highway driving on that either.

Sometimes I wonder why, I use my truck daily for work hauling 2-4k lbs of tools/equipment and haul work trailers to site (10-15k). My current ride needs tlc, just trying to see if putting money into it over a new truck is the right deal. I probably get 10-12mpg with the 2010, empty 13-15mpg. I just not sold on buying a new diesel, thats worse than my current truck. Gas is cheap right now, so I have to see if its worth a try. Not sure which way to go, I drive a gaser 1500 for work as well, depends on the job requirement.
