Default Oil consumption in RAM 2017 (5500 - 6.7 L)

The engine in my 2017 RAM truck was burning up oil slowly but I had to top it off every month with a quart. I took it to the dealer and to a neighborhood mechanic, they could not find any leaks or issues. I was changing my oil at the dealer but have no idea what brand they were using.

The neighborhood mechanic suggested this synthetic oil:

so I put it in and the consumption is better. I just have to top it off maybe 1/3 of a quart if that every month. My question is, does anyone have any experience with other brands of synthetics preventing oil consumption? I am due for an oil change and may want to test out another brand and maybe get to barely zero amount of topping off the engine. You do not have to have the same make model, just chime in if you used Mobil 1 or Pennzoil, Castrol and it helped your oil consumption.

thanks!

Sal.

No oil will prevent consumption.... Check your PCV system, make sure it is functioning properly. I am not sure if yours is the fixed orifice, or if there is actually a PCV valve in there... If there is actually a valve, get one from the dealer, they are actually the correct flow rate. (the aftermarket fellers, generally, are not.....)

How many miles on the truck? Do you get a puff of smoke at cold startup?

Absolutely not true. I was using Mobil 1 synthetic in a vehicle. It was burning a quart of oil nearly every 1,000 miles in a brand new car. I was thinking about using motor honey or some other additive to see if it would slow it down. I was at a car rally and I heard these two older guys talking to each other about that Amsoil stuff. I have never heard of that in my life. At that point, I was ready to get the engine rebuilt under warranty. I didn't know that you could buy that on-line. Anyway, I gave it a shot and sure enough, the oil consumption stopped 100%. I thought that maybe I was imagining things. So I went back to the Mobil 1. Sure enough, the oil consumption came back. From what I can tell you... DO NOT TRUST what dealers say. They are there to MAKE MONEY, NOT SAVE YOU MONEY. After I saw how good this stuff was working, my friend was ready to put the Amsoil tranny fluid in his Durango since he heard how good it worked for me. The dealer hee'd and haw'd about only use the fluids at the Dodge dealer. Reluctantly, he got scared and fell for their trick. 6 months later he ended up needing a new transmission. I've used this stuff in so many cars and have ZERO problems. My dad was a huge MOPAR fan and loved the Caravans. He just liked the comfort of the seating position. I told him to get an SUV but he didn't like it. You know how notorious the transmissions are in those Caravans for having failures. At over 30,000 miles he switched to the Amsoil ATF. He long since put 375,000 miles on that SUV and the entire drivetrain drives like a brand new vehicle. Like I said... DO NOT LISTEN to naysayers. I know dozens of people who used this stuff with amazing results. I could write a book about it. I've had many people tell me that I should become a dealer. I just don't have the time or patience for it. The public is just so dumb and they believe anything a dealer or mechanic will tell them. They keep forgetting the AGENDA of these people. And their agenda is NOT to make your vehicle run forever or to save money. It took me a long time to finally figure this out. With my dad's situation, if everybody did what he did, the dealers would nearly go out of business.

How long have you been a mechanic?

Different oils will burn at different rates, that is indeed true. Put a thick enough oil in it, and it won't burn as much. But what else is happening? Fuel economy, engine wear, etc. etc. etc.

ANY vehicle will make several hundred thousand miles, if you take care of it. Some aren't even that picky about how well you take care of them. I see 2nd gen Dodge Rams with 8.0 engine pushing 300K, or more, on a regular basis here. The frames rust out before the engine or trans fails.

That said..... You are quite correct that the dealer is not in business to SAVE you money. They also operate under some obscure restraints, dictated to them by whatever corporation they happen to sell for. I also don't have a real high opinion of what they call "Techs" these days. There are some out there that are good, know their stuff, and actually FIX things, and not just depend on a computer to tell them what part to replace.... Dealers don't make that much money selling cars, the REAL money is in the Parts, and Service departments.

I'm just a user. I have many family members who were mechanics. Many who are now passed away. They told me of the Amsoil. My dad was a huge MOPAR fan. He worked at a Dodge dealer as a mechanic. He confirmed to me that the Amsoil was way better than what Dodge was selling. He said those Caravans would have faulty transmissions ALL THE TIME. He's seen at least a dozen customers use Amsoil ATF in their Caravans and never had a transmission problem. I spoke with a guy who owned a junk yard. I caught him while he had a Caravan up on his flat bed and asked him where he was taking it. He told me it was going off to his scrap yard. I said, "WHY?!! It looks like a nice van!" He said it costs more to fix than the van is worth. And I said, "So people just throw them away?! Are you kidding?" He said they didn't throw it away. He paid a few hundred for it. But they will part it out. That's so sad. They van that he was dragging him barely had 90,000 miles on it. I didn't see any dents on it as I walked around. It didn't look like it was in any obvious accidents. I was just thinking to myself, had these people used Amsoil, they'd probably be still driving that van right now. But they either neglected it, as most people do, or they followed the advice of the dealer and used their fluids... guaranteeing doom. It's a real shame that no dealer service departments ever go around saying, "Here, keep your car to 400,000 miles. Use Amsoil before the wear starts." You'd have one honest dealer! I've been a long-time customer, so I've seen the miracles this stuff has done over all the other oils. I'm trying to help anyone save an engine or transmission... especially us poor folks who are unemployed during the pandemic.
