Default 2010 Ram Possible Fan Problem

On startup, I get a loud ticking sound for about five seconds in the cab. Not the famous Hemi Tick. Fan in auto, fan turns at the normal slow pace and ticks. After five seconds, it stop ticking. With with fan turned up high, the fan turns slower and ticks. When the ticking is done, the fan goes to high. Any ideas as to where the problem is. Sounds like it's behind the left side of glove box.

Something in the fan, or, the fan motor itself is failing.

How difficult is it to get to the fan?

I don't even know where it is on your truck. Maybe above the passengers feet?

The fan is above the passenger's feet behind the glove box. Gotta remove 3 screws (T-20, I believe) and it will drop out. Easy.

Thanks Sottis. I'm going to check that out. When I put my hand on the lower left side of what appears to be the fan housing that's the area where it seems to have a vibration from the fan. I can feel the housing vibrate while the ticking is happening. Been busy hunting so I haven't tried to fix it yet but the ticking is getting longer in duration.

Found it and it was a very easy fix and free. Turns out the driver's side ducts appear to be controlled by a blend door actuator. For the 2010 Laramie, the blend door actuator is located behind and to the left of the lower glove box. It's very obvious which bda is the problem. I removed the lower glove box. Very easy to do and takes about 15 seconds. Just push the back top sides of the glove box towards the center a bit and it will come right out. To the left you can see some blend door actuators. Once to lower glove box was removed, I started the truck. The blend door actuator began making a loud ticking sound for 20 seconds. If you put your hand on it you can feel the ticking. Two screws and unplug the plug and it's out. Once out, you can buy a new one for $20-$30. I watched a video and decided to take it apart. There are a lot of plastic clips holding the blend door actuator together. Work your way around the actuator and pop it apart. Inside you will see three plastic gears. The bad one is very noticeable. The blend door only opens about 30-40 degrees. If you look behind the actuator before you take it off, you will see a white square arm. The blend door actuator moves that arm up and down. You only need to reverse the gear 180 degrees and the bad spot will never be in the way. Snap it back together and reinstall. It's an easy 20 minute fix that anyone who knows which end of a screwdriver to hold can do. If you lost your heat on the driver's side, check out this actuator, remove it, fix it and save lots of money.

Thanks Crabman, I had the same issue today on my 2010 in -20 F weather. I Rotated the gear like you described and it worked flawlessly.
