Default 2012 RAM 2500 4x4 transfer case explosion

From what I understand this unfortunately isn't a rare issue, but my father-in-law's 2012 RAM 2500 4x4 with the 68FRE 6 speed automatic transmission had the transfer case explosion problem while going down the interstate. He's sourced a new transmission and t-case but can't find the wiring harness for the transmission. The original one was absolutely destroyed and got ripped out on the interstate somewhere. The truck caught fire from the fuel tank getting punctured, it was just a whole mess. Anyway, everything is back together except that wiring harness. Dealerships say they can't get them anymore and no shops around here can find them. Do you guys have any idea where to get one of those wiring harnesses?

Car-Part.com. They can give you a list of places that have the correct configuration truck on their lot, contact them directly by phone. See if someone can ship you one.

Some of these trucks didn't go many miles before getting wrecked. Salvage yards will be your best bet here. Depending on where you are, there may be several operations close to you. Is insurance covering this?

I managed to find a part number for this harness on an ebay listing. It's 68085409AE if anyone else runs across this in the future. After a lot of time scouring the Internet I found a dealership in TX that claims to have one in stock. Salvage yards here in AL are all old school, no computers etc just have to hunt around so trying to find stuff is almost always a huge waste of time.

Insurance isn't covering it since the vehicle detonated itself rather than it being caused by something or someone else. I guess if you ran comprehensive it /might/ cover mechanical issues? I'm not really sure on that. Anyway my FIL's insurance isn't covering it so he's been repairing it out of pocket. I ordered the harness for him at $450 shipped, not terrible.

At one time, Chrysler Corp. had the NS1 network. The dealers would put their NOS stock on it and other dealers could look for parts. I got a drag link for my Chrysler 300K that way once. It sounds like you got a part off what ever it's called now. I can see the insurance not covering a transfer case failure. Comprehensive is for things you can't control. Like a Deer jumping out in front of you.

I'm guessing you're right grouch. The dealership called and canceled my order, saying they didn't have the part (even though the website said they did) and that they couldn't get it because it's been discontinued.

These trucks are way out of my budget anyway, but dang. I'd never buy a Dodge product if they quit making parts so soon. I can still get parts for my old '86 Nissan D21 from the dealer down the road...

The hunt continues...

Some companies have great after sales support, and some don't. Chrysler used to,before the merger and looting by Daimler. I generally don't bother with newer Chrysler products as they just seem too dainty to me. My '96 is bullet proof. I had an '03 with the 4.7 and wasn't impressed with it.I doubt I'll buy any new Mopar products unless I hit the lottery and then it would probably be a Cummins powered truck. I know emissions has to be met, still, I prefer the older more reliable stuff.

Where is the truck located? I've been out of the salvage business for decades, but maybe someone I know from back in the day might be able to find what you need.

Yep myself I tend towards older stuff. My other car is a 87 Mercedes 190D turbo. Newer stuff has too many of these fancy wiring harnesses and junk lol.

The truck is here in Florence AL at the moment (I don't remember which shop he has it stored at). Haven't had any luck finding the harness in Nashville or Huntsville. After talking to a Dodge truck salvage guy in CA (he said they call what happened to my FIL the "driveline tornado" they see it so often), I got the actual part number for his truck from the dealership (rather than using a parts lookup tool) and his harness is number 68140301AC. I had no idea there would be multiple harnesses for the same year/option of truck, absolutely bazaar to me why they wouldn't make one that does them all.

If you have any luck finding one my FIL would be super appreciative. His truck has been out of commission since November. Thanks for the help and tips.

I'm about 275 road miles north of you. I'll ask around here. There are two or three yards locally that may or may not have the part. Send me a PM with all the details along with the VIN, as I know they will ask. How the truck is equipped, part # and anything else to track it down. If I find something, I'll get you in touch with the place that might have it.
