Default 8 speed zf transmission replacement

does anyone on here have experience with replacing the 8 speed ZF transmission? I'm looking to buy a used tranny since they want 7-8k for a rebuild but I'm not sure of what all i need, is the tcm built into the valve body? is it separate? should i just sell the truck? i know these German trannys are quite expensive to fix/ maintain

Fluid level up to snuff? Getting any trans codes?? It *should* whine if the PCM detects slipping.

Yes, the TCM is integrated into the valve body. If you actually have an 8HP70 make sure you replace with another 70 and not a 75 (newer version).
The TCM in the trans itself is actually what makes it relatively straightforward to swap that trans into other vehicles. I've seen some nutty retrofits, but the best one is probably the 2004 quad cab running around Canadia with a 6.1 based 392 stroker run by a Holley standalone hooked to an 8HP70.
