2009 Ram rear diff locked up at 18k miles
Going down the interstate I heard a whine which at first I assumed was the grooved road. It suddenly started to get louder so I moved over to the shoulder just in time to have the drive shaft fall and the rear end completely lock. It got towed to the nearest Dodge dealer and I suppose I'll hear from them Monday. Now I find this seems to be pretty common on Dodge trucks. No problems before this except for once a couple of weeks ago I heard a weird sound when I backed out of the driveway, but then it was fine. I thought I ran over a rock or something. Does Dodge need to recall these? I was on my way to pcik up a new trailer and I could have been in the middle of traffic towing it home when it locked up. It could have been ugly.
My Uncle who bought his truck same time as me but he got the locking tailgate and well mine didnt he had a moan at 80km/hr and they put a new locking diff. he has a single cab sport I thing 392's
I have a 2010 crewcab sport with 3.55s and just took for a 6 hr trip to Lake Havasu and on the way back i noticed a humming noise it was real high pitch and it would be there as long as you were accelerating as soon as you let off it would go away! but im not sure if its the tranny or rearend? So after seeing yours mines going back to the dealer for sure!

The way you describe the gas pedal noise on/off is exactly what happened a couple of minutes before this happened. This all happened over the course of several minutes. No other warning. Hope you make it to the dealer. You may consider staying on the sidestreets to avoid a high speed rear axle lockup on the highway.
You will have to post up what you find out. mine did this for a good 2 hours on the freeway all the way home so i don't think mine is going to fail as fast as yours did but something is definatley not right!
Be curious to hear the state of the gear oil. I've got 33K on my 2009 and only changed the gear oil once, but it gets checked often.
