Navigation in an 06 Ram
I have an 06 Ram 1500 with the basic 4 speaker system that the truck comes with stock. I’m looking into getting this navigationhead unit (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pn...264980,00.html). After reading the installation manual on pioneers website I notice that it says you need to tap into the vehicles speed pulse wire. My question is where is this wire located and what color is it.
Thanks in advance
There is several places to find the wire, check with www.bulldogsecurity.com they usually have pretty accurate wiring locations. Make sure you test the wire you think it is before tapping into it.
ahh yes the dreaded speed pulse wire... really u dont have to because most HU's tell you to use the parking break sensor... that might only be on standards... but anyway... I dont like following the rules when it comes to finding that wire... all i do is find a wire that is grounded and tap into that and run a switch to it so i can view navigation/video whenever i am driving or anything... but thats just me... I think i still used the parking break/ e-brake wire on the tacoma i installed on and the same with the Jeep Wrangler i did as well... Good luck with the install, Nav/dvd units are great accessories to a vehicle and come in great use when ur lost. IMHO Pioneer and Eclipse make the best Nav Units out there.
The Speed sense, or VSS wire is not to lock out video while driving. Does it play a part in this? Yes, but it would do it even with it not hooked up. The prupose of the VSS is to make the navigation and vehicle dynamics of the headunit more accurate. If you go into a tunnel and the sat can no longer track your vehicle, it can estimate where you are on the map via the speed you're traveling until a clear signal is restored.
It also makes the speedometer on the Vehicle Dynamics (if equiped)much more accurate. Never ground the VSS wire.
On your truck you will get an adapter called a Can-Bus adapter. It is Metra/Axxess Part# CHTO-01 This will convert the factory Can-Bus signal from the truck and give you a wire for VSS, Reverse gear signal, as well as a source for switched 12V acessory that is normally not found behind the radio in that truck when adding an aftermarket radio.
Did your truck come factory with Navigation? If not you'll need to order the factory Nav Bezel from an onlne source or the dealership to fit the D3. And then get the Metra Double-Din dash kit to make it all work together (Part# 99-6510)
There IS a way to bypass the video lock-out while driving function on the D3. Not sure what the rules are about posting it here publicly, but if you want to know how just PM me and I will tell you how. It's not as simple as grounding a few wires like most in-dash screens, you have to swap a couple wires in the harness, but it's still very simple.

^^Umm so what do you do when you lose satelite feed? The VSS and Gyro work together to create on going navigation until you regain satelite feed. Not to mention if your HU has something to read car performance, like some Pioneers, it will not work at all if you ground it out.
OOPs my bad... I have no idea why I said that... I definitely missed the boat this time... To my credit though... its about 90degrees in my office right now (NO AC ) So perhaps im suffering from Heat stroke
