Caliberforums.com is dishing the dirt on the new Caliber SRT-4, and they don't seem too pleased. Forum member Ironside happened upon a 2008 model guide while visiting a local Dodge dealer and when he flipped through the book, he spotted the SRT specs and pics. He even photocopied the pages and posted them for proof. Many forum members seem to be let down, as the promised 300 hp is apparently not gonna happen. Here are the posted specs and a few comments: [ul][*]2.4L DOHC 16V Dual VVT 4-cylinder intercooled/turbocharged World Engine with 280hp @ 6000-6400rpm, 260 lb-ft torque @ 200-5600rpm.[*]0-60mph = 6.2 seconds[*]1/4 mile = 14.6 seconds[*]Top speed = 157mph[*]The SRT-4 will have a choice of two different 19" 5-spoke rims, the painted ones like on current SRT's, and the chrome ones.[*]Final colours that are offered are brilliant black, sunburst orange, bright silver and inferno red (So no new colours like we'd hoped for the SRT).[*]The front driver seat FOLDS FLAT.[*]NO MyGIG.[*]***NEW INTERIOR*** Offered in what they call a "new completely dark slate grey" (huge improvement from the sound of it). [/ul] Thanks for the tip, Jim!

I have a feeling this car is going to be a complete and utter flop. This new SRT-4 lacks all the spirit of it's predecessor.
The Neon-based version harkened up memories of the Plymouth Roadrunner and Dodge Superbee with it's raw, bare-bones performance. Driving the old SRT-4 was comparable to riding atop a rocket- tremendous fun with a small measure of fear thrown in. Mash the gas from a stop and the steering wheel would jerk sideways as the BFGoodrich tires clawed for traction before the car soared off into the wild, blue yonder. The old SRT-4 was harsh and in some ways quite spartan, but that was all part of the fun. Though it resembled a Neon (and in many ways it was), one could clearly see the crazed, axe-murderer DNA shining through.
The new Caliber SRT-4 seems so watered down and politically correct to me. With it's bland (if not awkward) styling and lesser performance, it is an utter disappointment to me. It looks more suited to fetching groceries than catching Mustangs. With it's long delay in release, I can only imagine what horrible problems had to have been overcome by the SRT team (which begs the question: did they solve them all?). I suppose we'll have to wait until it's properly tested to find out for sure. All I know is: I'm not at all tempted to purchase one.
