Replacement cats are always way over inflated, price an aftermarket and look at the difference. Then consider that the manufacturer pays a very small fraction of what the inflated one costs you.

Nofrag (still I wonder if this is an aquarium reference), the problem is that the beauracrats are not interested, so much, in how lean a vehicle runs as they are what % certain contaniments are at.Engines are LESS fuel efficient today, than in the 90's, because OBDII uses MORE engine power to put out less CO2 by the way the exhaust is recirculated and burned. The fact is, there is MORE CO2 by volume, but less by % of the volume. The beauracrats were coming up with an arbitrary lower (or higher-depends on which compound they want to scr@w with) number, just to say they have "made the emissions cleaner", even though they knew they were causing MORE of the pollutant they claimed to want to minimize. This never-ending "adjusting" of exhaust measurements costs far more in engineering costs for the car makers than the components on the car. If you need more evidence, ask me about EGR's on diesel engines. That is the biggest boon-doggle in US and Canuck auto history.
