Tom Lasorda guarantees lower Canadian sales figures
By threatening to leave Canada. So if the government doesn't kowtow to his demands, Chrysler will close their Canadian plants, causing some 26,000 people to lose their jobs. If that were to happen, I could see a heavily supported push to nationally boycott mopar. Even if it wasn't on a government level, I couldn't see many people in Ontario buying a chrysler product after this happens. But I did say he's guaranteed lower sales figures didn't I. That's right, even if the government and CAW do give in, it won't change the fact that Tom Lasorda, Chrysler's president and vice-chairman, stood up in our house of commons and threatened to put 26,000 people out of work for spite. That pisses alot of people off, and I doubt it'll soon be forgotten.
We all have to give a little to save the bigger objective.
I just dropped to a 32hr work week since business is slow. By giving up 8 hrs, I still have 32 and a job.
Over here, the union worker gave up alot to keep their jobs as well. Not fair the our Canadian friends don't do the same for the sake of the company!!

Well the union guys are making concessions, and the government already had plans to give loans, just as your government has. But what Lasorda did was nothing short of terrible PR to say the least. To come into Chrysler's 2nd largest market and threaten to pull out, well that is just plain stupid. Actually does Chrysler sell anything overseas? Because I think that might make us the only other market.
I think the media is blowing this out of proportion. After reading the article it seems less like a threat to me than that he's just being blunt and brutally honest about the situation. It's no secret Chrysler is not in a good position financially and they need to cut costs, if operations in Canada are indeed higher cost it seems logical to seek concessions or relocate operations to someplace more suitable. Obviously he didn't go about this very tactfully but I certainly wouldn't call it blackmail.
