Default 73 challenger 340 4spd

Hi everyone i'm new and just posted this in the new members, but I think I found the right forum now. I have a 73 challenger 340 4spd but all the parts markings on the car say 72. Has anyone ever heard of this. I have had the car for six years and it runs great. I am thinking about building a 440 for it though. Any suggestions. Thanks Sal.

What parts are we talking about? The 1973 model year started in Aug 1972 so if your car is an early build date that might answer a few issues. I owned a 1973 Challenger 340 4spd once also!!!

JH23 = Challenger 2 door hardtop
H = 340 4-barrel
3 = 1973 model year
B = Hamtramck Michigan assembly plant
Last 6 digits are your sequence number.

My 72 was a 340 car also. I'm finishing it off as we speak and I put a 440 back in it. You can't just beat seeing a big block stuffed into one of these cars.

I have a '73 340 4 speed as well. I'd think through whether you really want to take it out. They are great running engines. If you do, hang on to it!

[blockquote]That sounds like it'd be a very nice car. As for switching the 340 out for a 440, if you decide to do that make sure you keep the original drivetrain as it's always good to keep a numbers-matching car. (I still have the VIN numbers posted throughout the Net for the '73 340 engine I bought in hopes of reuniting it with the 340/4-speed car it came from.) Personally, I'd build up the 340 to pull some stout numbers and have fun taking out many other cars with the small block. 340's can really hold their own when done up wisely and actually give the BB's a good run. Not to deter you from this site, but you should join up at www.cuda-challenger.com if you aren't there already. We're always looking for more E-body owners who enjoy the forum communities and aren't afraid to show off their rides, whether they're full-blown projects, nice cruisers, or amazingly preserved originals.
