Both cars are very nice. Are they true birds or Sebrings though? I see they have Sebring hoods and no emblems or running birds on the sides. I loved having mine as a daily driver, but the salt during the winter makes it a no no and it now runs on Cam2 which makes it unaffordable for daily use.[&o] I would love to get another to make into a clean daily driver though.

what heads came stock on that car? That will help to determine which modifications to make. i believe that the 71 j heads were 2.02 heads and that is a 10.4 compression motor...which is nice.

4500 is a decent amount of money to put into a car that doesnt NEED anything. if the pistons and heads are good, i would recommend putting a full bearing set, and new rings, gaskets, etc.

If it is completely stock, i would suggest starting with the flow of the engine:

-headers, If you do have the 2.02/1.60 heads, you can get away with either a 1 5/8 or 1 7/8, but the 5/8 is big enough. I currently have hookers on the mirada and the demon is getting the flowtechs. the flowtechs are good headers, for a low price. 200-600 USD

-intake manifold, I cant say enough good things about the edelbrock air gap intake. if you want to cut back on expense here, look into an LD340. I had not used the LD340, but i will be soon. I have read that some have gotten the same flow out of the airgap and the ld340. around 200 USD

-carb, This is pretty much upon your preference..i prefer holley carbs, because its what im familiar with, and ive had great luck with them. a demon street/strip carb will set you back about 750 USD.

-Cam, i run the 528, but i dont have any vacuum accessories. I understand that the 509 cam is a nice street cam, and i will find out when the demon is on the road. from mopar you can get most of their cams for around 170 USD

-heads, if you want to burn some money in a hurry, you could get a nice set of aluminum heads. a set of edelbrocks will set you back about 1400 bucks, with valves, springs, etc. 1400 USD

-roller rockers, if youre going to buy better heads, you may as well upgrade to a roller system, 200 dollar USD

So, if you did everything that i listed, and you can do it yourself, youd have a completely refreshed bottom end, and an all new, fairly high performance top end. the parts that i listed will run around 3000-3300 USD. an engine rebuild gasket kit will run around 70 bucks for a 340, and the rings and bearings will vary in price depending on brand. a clevite main set will run you about 38 bucks, and the cam bearing set is around 26. i think that rod bearings will run you 4 or 5 bucks a piece...so figure 40 more there...around 100 bucks total there.
im sure that im leaving things out, like head studs, but you can see that for around 3500 bucks, you can have everything listed above, and the extra 1000 in your budget can cover the things which ive excluded. or, you could stick with the heads, and opt for something like with that 1400 bucks, like a torqoe convertor and gears. either way, if you just stick with the stock heads but get everything else including the cam, it will REALLY bring that motor back to life...and with the gears and higher stall, it will be like a whole new, much stronger and faster car.
