Default 8 3/4 or Dana?

I have a 68' Coronet R/T 440 4-speed. My fender tag indicates a A6 X8. The fender tag decoder I used indicates the A6 is(3.54/3.55 Dana/ 8 3/4) and the X8 is Sure grip.Which one is it? The Dana or 8 3/4? I don't have the build sheet. I was told by someone that the 4-speeds came with the Dana only. Can anyone confirm this. I've been out of the Mopar loop for about18 years and I'm getting the itch to restore my R/T.
Since I'm new to the forum I'll give a little history on my Dodge. I purchased it 1987 for $800! (yes, I stole it!) Car was complete just needed to be restored. I had the body work and paint done, new vinyl top, new interior purchased from Legendary but not installed yet,and started rebuilding the motor. Ended up getting married and started a family so it went on the backburner for the last 18 years. I'm overdue to get working on it again. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Look under the car from the rear, the Dana has a rear cover with the bolts in plain sight and the 8 3/4 is front loaded with the rear plain.

If your using the decoder I have you need to make certain the codes are in the correct box or your codes will be wrong.

Thanks 71 RoadRunner. I knew how to tell the difference between the two. What's under there now is the 8 3/4. I just don't know if that is what it is supposed to be. The decoder I used didn't solve my problem because it lists both rearends and gear ratios. I wouldn't be questioning the 8 3/4 but the person that told me that the 4speeds came with theDana is quite the Mopar nut. However, he has been (shall I dare say it?) wrong a couple of times in the past. He's usually right though. I just want to make sure I have the correct rearend in the car.

Here is a decoder for your car (if it's not the one you've already used), you will need to enter all the info your tag has to figure it out: http://www.jani-immonen.net/decoders/tag6768.html

I don't see any way to tell for certain other than the broadcast sheet, none of the codes on the tag seem to narrow it down as to which it is for certain.

71 RoadRunner,
It is a different decoder than the one I used however, I came up witht the same information. I guess I'll just leave the 8 3/4 in. It ultimately doesn't matter because I don't plan on selling the car. Just my pet peave. Thanks for your help.

If the car is origional, that is 440 4spd, it should have the Dana 9 3/4 rear axle. All1966 to 1971Hemi and 440 4spd cars were equipped with the Dana 9 3/4 axle. Either one of the owners blew the Dana and didn't want to spend big bucks replacing it or swapped a buddy for his 8 3/4 and some cash before they traded it in. You will have to check your drive shaft lenght too.
Here is a heplful sitewww.maxwedge.com/junkyard/axle.html

What plant was yours built at? What is the first two digits of your VIN? The Lynch Road plant has different tags and they often times won't decode right with the fill-in-the-blank type decoders.
